The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

Every born-again believer should be baptized in the Holy Spirit! Jesus commanded his disciples to not depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father! Our heavenly Father only has good and perfect gifts to give! The gift of the Holy Spirit is no exception! The church needs the dynamic duo of the Word and the Spirit! We shouldn’t blow up or dry up! We all need to grow up in the power of the Spirit and foundation of the Word of God. If the Acts 2 church needed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we still need it today!

The Outpouring Of The Holy Spirit Transcript

Welcome, friends, to the broadcast. I’m so glad that you’ve tuned in today. I have my beautiful wife, Barbara, with me today, and we are teaching about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And today we’re gonna be in Acts, chapter eight. We’re gonna be talking about Philip and how he went down to Samaria and preached God, Christ to them. And when they heard the devils come out, and when they saw the miracles he did, they believed Jesus. Friends, I’m so glad that you’re with us today, and it’s so good to have Barbara with me and share in the Word of God. We’re talking about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and we talked yesterday about the initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit when the church was born on the day of Pentecost and Acts, chapter two, in Jerusalem. And how there that we, there were 120 of the disciples of Jesus gathered together praying. Jesus had told them to tarry in Jerusalem until they received power from on high. And the Holy Spirit was poured out and they all began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. And God specifically waited ’til the day of Pentecost 50 days after the resurrection because there were devout Jews that had come together to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost in Jerusalem, the Bible says, “…from every nation under heaven.” What a way to get the gospel out.

  Amen.

And they received the whole, they, you know, first of all, they said, “What is happening? “We hear all these Galilean disciples “speaking in our own languages of the wonderful works of God “and praises to God.” And Peter got up and said, “This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.” God said He would pour out of His spirit on all flesh in the last days. And then he preached to them Jesus and said, “He is the one, the one you crucified, “God raised from the dead, sent this forth.” And he said, “This promise is to you and to your children, “and to as many as the far off.” He did not limit it to that

That’s right. specific group of people or that specific generation. He said to the next generation and to all who are far off. Acts 2:39, check it out. Hallelujah. But then we see there wasn’t only an initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts. There was a continual outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And so we’re gonna jump ahead today and we’re gonna talk about Acts, chapter eight. So Barbara read in Acts chapter eight, read verse four through verse eight.

Okay, so this tells me in my Bible, “Therefore, those who were scattered went everywhere “preaching the Word. “Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria “and preached Christ to them “and the multitudes with one accord “heeded the thing spoken by Philip, “hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.” I like this. There were signs, hearing and seeing, “For unclean spirits crying with a loud voice “came out of many who were possessed “and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed “and there was great joy in that city.”

So Philip went and preached. You know, Philip was one of the seven who was chosen to be a deacon, a table servant, and take care of the widows, take care of some of the physical business of the church. And they called him a deacon. And yet God calls him an evangelist. Later in Acts, chapter 21, about verse eight through verse 14, in there it says, they entered into the one, Philip, the evangelist, calls him an evangelist. And an evangelist should do this. An evangelist, by definition, should preach the good news and they should operate in gifts of power. And Philip did that. He cast out devils. Jesus said, “Those who believe will cast out devils. “They will speak in new tongues, “they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.” Mark chapter 16, among some other things. Now it says the people, when it, Philip preached Christ, he preached the good message of Jesus to them. The people gave, he, because they heard and saw the miracles that he did. They heard demons come out and they saw lame people, paralyzed people, get up and walk. Hallel , he was operating in the working of miracles, probably operating in the gift of faith and the gifts of healings, too.

You know, a lot of times people, Christians, really make the mistake talking about the enemy, the deceiver, you know, Satan, the devil, and all of his demons as though they have, you know,

All power. they talk all the power.

They don’t. And Jesus said, “I have all authority “and I am giving it to you.” So we have authority

Yes. in the name of Jesus to take authority over these silly, I call ’em silly things.

Right. The devil and his demons are just silly. Their only weapon really is to deceive people. They have no power over anyone. They just whisper lies in people’s ears and don’t be dumb enough to buy the lie. You know?

That’s right. Read the Bible, do what it says. But I like how it said that they prayed for people and cast the demons out. And you know for

Amen a period of time you went to school at Dr. Lester Sumrall’s in South Bend, Indiana

Right. years ago and he really talked about the authority the believer had and we witnessed how he prayed for people.

And listen, he cast out devils and he said, “You don’t have a conversation with the devil.” He had demons and demonology one and demons and demonology two, he taught, these are whole syllabuses of teaching and alien entities, so on and so forth. But listen, people came from all around the world, all around the nation to be prayed for, to get healed, to get the devil cast out of ’em and he cast the devil out of ’em. Praise God. And he got ’em healed. And he, you know, he had a gift in that area. He operated very strong. But you know, some people, they just talk about the devil, the devil, the devil, I get, and they magnify the devil more. In fact, I just told the guy, he is asking me about a teaching he sent me and I said, “Listen, you better magnify the name of Jesus.” And I, you know, I understand spiritual warfare, that is a biblical term. Now, some of the people that I hang with don’t even like the term, but it is biblical. In Ephesians 6:12, in 2 Corinthians 10:4 5, it is a biblical term. But here’s how we teach it. Number one, there is a spiritual battle. Number two, the devil is a defeated foe. And number three, we have authority over the devil in the name of Jesus.

You might repeat that. The devil is a?

  Defeated foe.

Defeated foe. And sometimes people are so focused on the devil and demons and all his work, they forget to magnify Jesus. So I told this person, “Okay, you could teach this, “but you need to take this part out and take this part out, “and you better magnify the name of Jesus.” Praise God.

Because Jesus already did the work.

Jesus is the answer. Jesus, all, I like what you said, that’s Matthew 28:18 20. He said, “All authority is given to me in heaven and Earth. “Go ye therefore and teach, make disciples of all nation, “baptizing them or immersing them into,” who? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. And he said, “Teaching them to observe my commandments. “And lo, I’m with you always, “even to the end of this world,” or this age. Jesus is with us and Jesus has all authority, and He’s given us authority. The Bible says in Colossians 2:10, that we are complete in Him who is the head of all principality and authority. You study the Book of Colossians, you find out Jesus is Lord of heaven. He created all things. Jesus was Lord when He walked on Earth. Jesus was Lord over sin, Lord over sickness, Lord over death, Lord over lack, Lord over the storm, Lord over demon. Man you, Jesus is Lord. But then when He went to the grave, Jesus is Lord of the grave.

Amen. And the Bible says in Philippians, chapter two, that God has highly exalted Him and given Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow. Things in heaven, things on the Earth, and things under the Earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the Father. And we plainly wanna focus more on demons than we wanna focus on Jesus and His lordship. But we have authority over the works of the devil. And you don’t have to let the devil have a heyday in your life. You can take authority over the works of the devil. You don’t need to talk about the devil more than you talk about God. You don’t need to magnify the works of the devil. You need to magnify the name of Jesus.

  Amen.

  Hallelujah.

You know, we talked about it in yesterday’s teaching, how both of us, you know, received and heard about the baptism of the Holy Spirit when we were 13 and 14 years old and it really changed our life and changed our direction because being in these body of believers, these churches that taught that, they taught the authority of the believer.

  Yes.

And so I wasn’t raised with this victim mentality that Satan can just, you know, walk all over you.

  Amen.

I was taught that I have authority over that and on every wickedness.

Amen. And another thing I believe that’s a big difference, too, is I, we were, you know, especially when we raised our children, we didn’t raise ’em with this always look and focus at the lack. That, again, is just a lie of the enemy, a lie of the devil

Amen. that there’s lack in your life. When we receive Jesus Christ, there is no lack.

You know, this scripture was coming to me in the middle of the night, but Psalm 34:10 says this. It says, “The young lions lack and suffer hunger, “but those who trust the Lord shall not lack “any good thing.” And you know what? I don’t care if God has to take the ravens and bring me food, bring me, God is gonna take care of Lawson Perdue. You know, I mean,

That’s right. before Lester Sumrall went around the world preached, he’s just a young man, and he preached two weeks at the largest church in Southern California and the pastor took him to get on the ship to go to Australia to find Howard Carter got, he had, you know, had conversation with Howard Carter, and they were supposed to meet up, but he didn’t know where he went and they didn’t have communication like we have today. And the Lord said, “Go to the bottom and work up.” And this pastor begged Lester Sumrall not to go. And he said, “You know what?” He told that pastor, this pastor gave him almost nothing for preaching two weeks. And he got on the ship and had like five dollars after he paid the ticket. And he said, “If I,” he told this pastor, he said, “If I go to China and starve to death, you write a book “and you come put,” he actually said, “you put on my tombstone, here lies Lester Sumrall “starved to death trusting Jesus.” And he said, “With those words, we parted.” He said, “I needed to be a little more sanctified “in those days.” And he’s about 80 when I heard him preaching this. He said, “By the way, I need to be a little more sanctified now.” Now, his spirit was already sanctified, but that work of sanctification needs to continue in our life, you know, all our life through, praise God.

Well, you know, you just brought something out, talking about our personal stories, and then even someone we love very much, Dr. Lester Sumrall. But what was really a game changer for me, you’ve gotta understand, when I was growing up, I was very shy, timid, and bashful. And I was just told that was my personality. There’s nowhere in the Bible that says God created shy, timid people.

  No.

You know, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Bible tells us it’s going to give us a boldness. I became a bold person

Amen. for the things of Jesus Christ and for His Word.

Amen. You know, the Bible actually says they were filled with a Holy Ghost in boldness. Now, we’re gonna come back shortly, we’re gonna have a short break, but we’re gonna talk about what happened after this. See, they received the Word of God that Philip preached because they saw the miracles that he did. Paul said this, 1 Corinthians 2:4 5, Paul said, “When I came to you, my speech and preaching “was not within enticing words of man’s wisdom, “but it was in demonstration

Amen. “of this spirit and of power “that your faith should not stand in the wisdom “of men, but in the power of God.” This is before Paul got saved in Acts, chapter eight, Paul got saved in Acts, chapter nine. But you know, Paul said, “I came preaching,” right, “and I had show and tell.” Praise God. I came demonstrating the power of the Holy Ghost and preaching the good news. And that’s what Philip did. And because of it, people got saved. They got water baptized, and later they got baptized in the Holy Spirit when the elders came from the church at Jerusalem. So we’re gonna talk about that. Some of you think that you got saved and you’ve got all the Holy Spirit that you can get. And when you get saved, you have the same spirit that raised up Jesus from the dead living in you. That’s what Romans, chapter eight, says in verse nine through verse 11. But there’s another aspect of the Holy Spirit that every born again believer needs to receive. And we’ll talk about that. And I’m gonna show you right here in the scripture how it’s a separate experience from salvation. So we’re gonna read right here in Acts, chapter eight, talk about that when we come back. Stay tuned. You don’t wanna miss the rest of this broadcast. We’ll be back in a few seconds. Blessings. Friends, I’m so glad that you’re with us today. And I want to tell you about a very special offer today and this week we are offering “Absolute Victory in Christ,” my book on salvation, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and believing the Word for a donation of any amount. Plus, we’re offering our teaching on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in audio or video download free of charge. Blessings. The world has tried to change the value of what is truth. So what is truth? Jesus is the embodiment of truth. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. “No man comes to the Father except by me.” Friends, I’m so glad that you stayed with us. We’ve been talking today about how Samaria, see, the Holy Spirit was poured out in Jerusalem and then after a period of time, Philip went down to Samaria and preached Christ to them.

  That’s right.

He cast out devils, he healed the sick. Many who were paralyzed got healed. I’m sure there was a working of miracles, the gift of faith, the gifts of healing working in these areas, demons were coming out of people. And when they saw the miracles that he did, and when they heard the demons came out, they gave heed to the word that he spoke in and there was great joy in that city. Now, when we go on down in verse 12, it says, “When they believed Philip preaching the things “concerning the kingdom of God in the name of Jesus, “they were baptized, both men and women.”

  Amen.

So you see, they believed the gospel. And after they believed the gospel, you know, Mark 16, Jesus said, “Go into all the world, “preach the gospel to every creature. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved “and he that believeth not shall be damned.” Okay? So notice the emphasis there in Mark 16:15 and probably verse 16. But the in verse 15, the emphasis on the believing more than the baptism.

  Amen.

Praise God. So when they believed it, they were baptized. Hallelujah. And so if you’ve believed on Jesus, did you know what? You ought to go ahead and get baptized.

  That’s right.

Now, I didn’t get baptized until after I received the baptism of Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. Because when I got saved, I actually went to a church that believed in salvation, but they did not believe in water baptism or the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And that was when I was eight years old. But then when I was 14 years old, I went to Andrew Wommack’s Bible study and I was already born again. I’d already believed on Jesus, but I had not been water baptized. And by then I was going to a church that my grandparents helped start and that church believed in salvation and water baptism, but not the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But I got baptized in the Holy Spirit in Andrew Wommack’s Bible study when I was 14 years old before I’d been water baptized. And when I got baptized in the Holy Spirit, I just had this tremendous hunger for the Word of God. And I was just devouring the Word. And I saw in the Bible, in the Book of Acts, when they got saved, they got baptized. So I went to my church that preached salvation and water baptism, and I talked to them and I got water baptized in that church. A church my grandparents had had helped start until they kicked us out for receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But then, so, and then when we read this, this is what happened in verse 14. So notice they, they heard the Word, they believed the Word,

I like that. there’s great joy. Then they received Jesus and got baptized, right? And then it says in verse 14, “When the apostles that were at Jerusalem “heard that Samaria had received the Word of God.” You know, these Samaritans were called outcasts. They were called dogs many times by Jews. And you know, they kinda looked down on ’em. But see, outsiders become insiders when they believe on Jesus.

  Amen.

Amen. And so when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria received the Word of God, they sent to them Peter and John two of the top leaders in the church, two of the top apostles, two of the closest to Jesus, right? And Peter and John went down there who, when they were come down, prayed for them in verse 15, that they might receive the Holy Ghost. They were already saved. They were already water baptized. And they had received the spirit of Christ in them, but they had not yet received the gift of the Holy Spirit with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, their personal prayer language, with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. You notice that, you read that if you be honest. See, some people believe what they believe no matter what the scripture says. Don’t make that mistake.

  Right.

Like the church you grew up in, you know what, they read from the Bible, read about speaking in tongues and then said, “It was not for us, it’s not of God,” and so on and so forth. And you said, “No, that’s in the Bible. “That must be for me.” That’s the Holy Spirit.

If it’s in the Bible, it’s for me. And I like how, you know, it talks about this and you keep mentioning it. It’s a gift. How many times has anyone refused a gift? A gift is free and a gift is usually something that somebody put some thought and time into it.

  Man.

And why would you not want to receive it? I can pretty much tell you when you have a gift for me, or when we exchange gifts as a family, I have never refused one. I receive it with gladness.

Amen. So why don’t we wanna receive all of God’s good gifts?

  God’s gifts, good gifts, amen.

Yeah, hallelujah. And it says, “They prayed for them,” in verse 15, “that they might receive the Holy Ghost.” Peter and John came down to these believers who had just received Jesus, who had just recently been baptized in water, and they prayed for ’em that they might receive the Holy Ghost. It says in verse 16, “For he was fallen on none of them, “only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. “Then they laid their hands on them “and they received the Holy Ghost.”

  Amen.

So they were saved, they were water baptized, and this is under the preaching of Philip. And then Peter and John came down from Jerusalem to Samaria. They heard that Samaria had received the Word of God and they laid hands on ’em and prayed for them, Peter and John did, and they received the Holy Ghost. So it went from Jerusalem, then it went to Samaria. Praise God. And did you know what? It’s just like the woman at the well, she was a Samaritan. Do you know the disciples marvel that Jesus talked with a woman at the well, number one, because she was a Samaritan, number two, because she was a woman. But Jesus came and told her, “Listen,” He said, “if you drink the water that I give you, “you will have in you a well of life “springing up into everlasting life.” That’s talking about salvation. And when you receive salvation, it’s like a well of life. Like an artesian well springing up, bringing life to you.

  Amen.

Do you know when you are saved, you have an anointing of truth, you have an anointing of life on the inside of you that brings life to you. You have the ability to live the Christian life just as well as any other believer.

  That’s right.

But then in John 7:37 39, Jesus at a great feast went down and talked to them. And He said, “He that believes on me, “out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” And when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongue, it’s like a river began. Some of you think I’m bold and outspoken and I am. Before I received the Holy Spirit, I was like, I was timid. I was not like this. The Holy Spirit made me bold. But you know, in high school or junior high before I received the Holy Spirit, older kids would pull my ears. I got kind of big ears and they would flush my head in the toilet and they would make fun of me and call me Dumbo. But when I got full of the Holy Ghost, I got bold. And did you know what? I quit taking that kind of garbage off people.

  Amen.

Reminds me of Lester Sumrall. One time, he was a little kid, and there was this bully at school and he is beating everybody up. And Dr. Sumrall, Lester Sumrall as a kid, he took him and he put him down in the gutter. And he said, “He was about six inches taller than me, “but when I stood on the curb and I was, “and he was in the gutter, we were the same size.” So he said, “I put him down in the gutter.” And then he said, “I hit him right in the nose “and I broke his nose!” Praise God. You know, he said blood went everywhere. He said, “That was the end of him bullying people around.” Some people just let the devil run rip shod over ’em. And you know what? The devil is nothing but a bully. But you gotta take authority in the name of Jesus. And you need to get full of the Holy Ghost and full of boldness and take authority over the works of the devil. Praise God.

And we reminded the people that the the devil is a defeated foe.

  Yes.

Jesus took care of all that. Jesus already got the victory for us. The work has already been done. And so quit magnifying the works of the devil.

  Amen.

And magnify what Jesus has already done.

Praise God, hallelujah. Amen, God is so good. You know, God has so many good things for us.

  That’s right.

The gift of salvation. The gift of the Holy Spirit, the gifts, manifestations of the holy. He has so many good things. Praise God.

  Why not receive them all?

Yeah, why not receive them all? Praise God. Barbara, share something with the people.

Well, praise God. I’m just so excited about this teaching. This is one of my favorite teachings, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And I love it. Can you read it? It’s in the book of Timothy where it talks about God has not given us a spirit of fear.

  Yes.

A power, love, and a sound mind.

  Amen.

And it’s interesting in the Bible, and I’m gonna have you read it, it says, “I remind you,”

  Amen.

  “to stir up.”

  “To stir up.”

“The gift of God that’s in you.” This is Paul talking to Timothy, his son in the faith. And in verse five, he talks about stir up the gift of God, which is in you by the putting on my hands. He’s like, I had a relationship with you. So, “Stir it up for God did not give us a spirit of fear.” That’s talking intimidation.

Amen. You talked about before you were baptized in the Holy Spirit, you were kind of intimidated. When I was kind of intimidated. But you know what? He said He gave us “…a spirit of power.”

  That’s right.

“And love and of sound mind.” And if you look at this, 1 Corinthians 12 talks about the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, the power of God. 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, talks about the love of God. And 1 Corinthians, chapter 14, talks about these gifts being done decently and in order. Doesn’t mean they’re not supposed to be used, but there is order that they flow in in the church. And that’s having a sound mind. Praise God. Everything to the edifying of the church. That doesn’t mean leave them out, but God did not get, you don’t have to be intimidated by the devil.

  That’s right.

Praise God. But you can be bold in your faith. Bold in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  Amen.

Amen. And if you haven’t received the Holy Spirit, I encourage you to get my book.
