How to Deal with Insecurity and See Yourself the Way God Sees You

By Pastor Lawson Perdue

You can use the Bible to know how to deal with insecurity and see yourself the way God sees you! There are many online influencers who say they have answers for your life. You might turn to philosophers, professors, and even theologians for information, but nothing can help you understand yourself better than your Creator. God has a good plan for your life, and turning to His Word is the best way to discover the truth about who you are in Christ and how God sees you!

What Causes Insecurity?

Let’s start out by examining what causes insecurity in a person and how to deal with it. The root of insecurity is fear, which manifests as uncertainty, lack of confidence, and doubt about yourself. Often, words spoken over a child take root and fuel insecurity. Judging and comparing oneself with others, as well as personal failures, can lead to insecurity, self-doubt, and negative self-talk. All of these can negatively impact relationships, cause emotional pain, affect physical health, and be an obstacle to your faith.

It is important to look at what the Bible says about insecurity, which is something several Bible characters dealt with. In the Old Testament, Gideon was called “a mighty warrior” by God and asked to lead an army, but he complained that he was the youngest of the smallest tribes of Israel (Judges 6). God’s answer given to counteract Gideon’s insecurity was, “I will be with you” (Judges 6:16).

Bible Verses to Help with Insecurity

Here are some Bible verses to help with insecurity:

Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

Philippians 4:6–7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

How Can I See Myself the Way God Sees Me?

There are also several daily practices to help overcome insecurity through faith in God. Insecurities come from believing lies about yourself. When you know the truth, the truth sets you free (John 8:32). God’s truth will help you see yourself the way God sees you through your identity in Christ, which means that the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross when He died and rose from the dead, paid for your sins, and now, because of grace, you are a child of God. Your new identity is that God looks at you and sees Jesus and what Jesus did. God isn’t looking at your failure and insecurities. He sees that you are: a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), righteous (Philippians 3:9), forgiven (Ephesians 1:7), loved (1 John 4:10), chosen (1 Thessalonians 1:4), adopted (Romans 8:15), and blessed with every blessing (Ephesians 1:3).

Another practice that can help Christians overcome negative self-talk is to counteract the devil’s lies with God’s truth about themselves. Look up the verses that explain how God sees you and turn them into scripture prayers of thankfulness. For example, 1 Thessalonians 1:4 says, “For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you.” Pray: “Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me and telling me that You chose me—and that is the truth I receive and believe!” By repeating how God sees you, you affirm what God says about you—His view is the only one that matters!

How Do You Build Confidence Through Faith in God?

Insecurities build up for years and might take time to counteract the lies, self-doubt, and negative self-talk. But you can build self-confidence as a Christian in understanding who you are in Christ and how He sees you. I like to share something that Dr. Lester Sumrall said to one of the Bible School students in South Bend, IN: “Dig a hole, build a strong foundation in your life!” Take the time to build a strong foundation of God’s truth in your life! Keep the focus on God, His Word, and His resources. You’ll be prepared to fulfill the call on your life through His strength and His ability. When you realize you can’t make it without God, you build a foundation on Him and what He says about you—believe it, speak it, and receive all that He has for you!
