Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

By Pastor Barbara Perdue

You are fearfully and wonderfully made, so stop letting the enemy tell you who you are! In case you didn’t know that about yourself, it’s true, and it’s from the Bible. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.”

So, what does “fearfully and wonderfully made” mean? It means that you aren’t an accident; you were created by God with a purpose and a plan. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” He also made you unique. If you read Psalm 139:13–17, you will see that He knew you from the time you were being formed in your mother’s womb and knows all of your days. You are precious to Him, and He thinks about you all the time!

How Can I Stop Believing Lies About Myself?

Some people struggle more than others with believing that God created them with special qualities to do good things (Ephesians 2:10) and loves them unconditionally (Jeremiah 31:3). I talk to some people with low self-esteem who ask, “How can I stop believing lies about myself?” The first thing you need to do is open your Bible and start reading the truths God says about you. Yes, God’s Word is truth, and His truth will set you free (John 8:32). As you read the Bible and believe it, you begin the process of renewing your mind to stop believing lies (Romans 12:2). When you transform your thinking, you remove the old, negative lies and replace them with God’s truth so you will view yourself and your identity from God’s perspective.

Now let’s explore some questions.

1. What does God say about your identity?

Your identity comes from God, who created you. Once you are born again through salvation in Jesus, the Bible says you are seated in heavenly places with Christ (Ephesians 2:6). Your new identity in Christ changes how you relate to God, yourself, others, and even the devil. You are a child of God and the heir to His promises (Galatians 4:7). As you live out your identity in Christ, you can shine His love through your words and actions, impacting the lives of others and pointing them to know God.

2. What does the Bible say about self-worth?

You might view your self-worth through your accomplishments, but the truth is that your worth comes from God, who created you in His image (Genesis 1:27). In 2 Corinthians 12:9, we read: “And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). This verse reminds us that our worth isn’t dependent on our abilities but on God’s grace! Ephesians 4:1 says, “…walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.” God has a wonderful calling and purpose for your life—He believes in you and sent the Holy Spirit to help you!

3. What does the Bible say about comparing yourself to others?

This dangerous practice leads to jealousy and insecurity, which are not God’s pathway for anyone: “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:16, NIV). Galatians 6:4 says, “But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.” When you realize that you are blessed by God, you won’t need to compare because you have contentment in all circumstances (Philippians 4:11–13).

4. What Bible verses can I use to combat negative self-talk?

Here are some powerful Bible verses that show how to take control of your thoughts and renew your mind to have positive thoughts that reflect God’s design for how He sees you and who He created you to be.

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Embracing the Truth That You Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

The bottom line is that embracing the truth that you are fearfully and wonderfully made by God places you on a transformative journey of aligning your inner thoughts with the truth of God’s Word and your identity in Him so you can impact others with the truth that sets you free.
