I’m probably one of the best people to explain why you can trust that God heals the brokenhearted, even when you don’t see it yet, because I lived that. Before I married Pastor Aaron, I was married for seven years, but my husband died of cancer. I had a young child and was absolutely devastated. It didn’t happen immediately, but I can attest to the fact that God really does heal the brokenhearted!
What Does the Bible Say About God Healing the Brokenhearted?
People tried to say things that brought comfort, which was nice, but what the Bible says about God healing the brokenhearted is powerful and what truly comforts. Psalm 147:3 simply says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” It’s not something you see happening immediately, but healing takes place little by little in your heart and emotions when you invite God in to do the healing. I tried to find comfort in many things, but only God could heal my broken heart.
How to Let God Heal Your Heart After a Breakup or Loss
If I did, you can do it too, just let God heal your heart after a breakup or loss. Look at what Jesus read in the Temple about Himself that Isaiah had prophesied about His mission: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18). Jesus understands our grief and sorrow, and He is the answer to them. He is the Healer, so let Him heal your broken heart.
Why Does God Allow Heartbreak?
Some people ask why God allows heartbreak, but the truth is God created our hearts to love—sin brought heartbreak to the earth. Don’t go putting heartbreak on God; He loves us, and God’s nature is love. Isn’t that amazing? Our God can only love because the penalty of sin has been paid by His Son, Jesus Christ. He wants everyone to love Him and follow Him. In fact, He’s the heartbroken one when we don’t love and follow Him.
Stories in the Bible Where God Healed a Broken Heart
I want to share two stories in the Bible where God healed a broken heart. First, in Ruth, chapter 1, Naomi’s husband and two sons died while they lived in a foreign land. Talk about heartbreaking circumstances; she was in so much grief that she wanted people to call her Mara, which means “bitterness.” You can read the rest of Ruth, but at the end of chapter 4, there is a lot of happiness when Naomi’s grandson is born—and spoiler alert—he was the grandfather of King David, and in the lineage of Jesus. Another Bible story, in John 11:1–44, reveals that Jesus wept when He saw the grief of Martha and the others mourning the death of Lazarus. Jesus understands what we are going through, and in the case of Lazarus, their broken hearts were filled with great joy when God’s glory was shown through Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.
What Are Some Bible Verses About Healing Emotional Pain?
Being brokenhearted can have many different causes. Did you know there are Bible verses about God healing emotional pain? Psalm 34:17–19 says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” Here’s one more that ministers to my heart, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4). It’s so important that when someone around us needs comforting—we know the Comforter—so let’s comfort others!

What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Broken?
By now, I hope you believe that God heals the brokenhearted, but what if you are experiencing spiritual brokenness? Spiritual brokenness happens when we realize we have sinned and want to repent. We cannot pay the price for our sins, so Jesus died and rose again to pay our penalty that we could not pay. That’s grace! Our brokenness doesn’t remain because once we accept the free gift of salvation, we start our journey of eternal life with God, culminating someday with an eternity in heaven. Now that’s certainly good news to cheer up anyone with any kind of broken heart! I pray that you talk to Jesus and let Him heal your spiritually broken heart by asking Him to be your Savior and giving Him first place in your heart and life!
