Raising Godly Children

There are some helpful Christian values to teach your child.  As parents, we want to give them every advantage in training them up in the way they should go.

IDENTITY:  The Bible tells us the truth about our identity.  We are made in the image of God!

Genesis 1:26-28, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness . . .’  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.  Then God BLESSED THEM . . .”  There is a God who LOVES US.  We are made in His very image, with His spoken blessing over us.

POINT YOUR KIDS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION:  Psalm 127:4, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.”  Arrows are made to hit a target.  We want our children to hit their target.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”  This verse is talking about discerning your child’s gifts, talents, and God-given anointing, and NURTURING THOSE GIFTS.  Amplified translation says this; “Train up a child in the way he should go (and in keeping with his individual gift or bent), and when he is old he will not depart from it.”  Your child needs to understand God has amazing plans for them.  God has a bright future for all of us.  Jeremiah 29:11.

WORK ETHIC:  It is a blessing to have a job not a curse.

II Thessalonians 3:10, “ . . . If anyone will not work, neither will he eat.”  Three things to ask; what is your natural strength?  In other words, what are you good at that separates you from others?  What brings you joy?  And last, where do you see a need?  Be a blessing in where you see the need.

BOUNDARIES AND DISCIPLINE:  I grew up in a home with five siblings.  No one gets their way every time.  We have to share.

Proverbs 29:15, “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”  Proverbs 29:17, “Correct your son, and he will give you rest.”  In other words, “Discipline your children; you’ll be glad you did – they’ll turn out delightful to live with.” (Message).

SEE GOD AS THE ANSWER (TRUST IN GOD):  Too often people think God is their problem.  He is the answer!

Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart . . . lean not to your own understanding . . . in all your ways acknowledge Him . . . He shall direct your path.”   I can put my trust in Him, knowing He will be faithful to guide me.

CONSISTENCY IN WORSHIP:  My favorite memories as a child are going to church, singing songs to worship God, and fellowshipping together.

Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another:  and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.”  It is important we surround ourselves with people of like-minded faith.  Encourage one another as we see the day approaching!
