Pastor Barbara Perdue
I’m excited to share with you how to grow closer to God and live with unshakeable peace. If you listen to the nightly news, you might think peace isn’t possible, but as Christians, we have direct access to the Prince of Peace, Jesus. In fact, Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” True peace comes from Jesus, so I want to go directly to the source, draw closer to Him, and learn from Him.
What Does the Bible Say About Growing Closer to God?
Let’s look at what the Bible says about growing closer to God. James 4:8 tells us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” If you want to grow closer to your spouse or your children, you spend more time with them, listen to them more carefully, and make a point of learning who they are and what they like and dislike. That’s how relationships work with people, but you may be wondering what it means to grow closer to God, who doesn’t physically sit down at the kitchen table and have a conversation with you.
Why Do I Feel Distant from God?
First, some people struggle with the idea that God wants to be close to them. They may see Him as unapproachable or angry, and both of those assumptions are wrong. God loves every person, and because Jesus paid the price for all sin, God is not angry. Sometimes people feel distant from God, which causes them to think He doesn’t want to be close to them. God isn’t mad at you or staying away from you. He wants a relationship with you.
God doesn’t force anyone to draw close to Him, but He is always there, waiting for us to seek Him. Psalm 145:18 says, “The LORD is near to all who call upon Him.” So don’t wait. Today is the best day to start growing closer to God.

How Can I Stay Connected to God in a Busy World?
I want to share how I stay connected to God in a busy world. I love starting my day with a cup of coffee and reading my Bible to learn more about Him. As I read, I ask the Holy Spirit to show me things and speak to me through the Word. Then I go for a walk and talk to Him as I admire the nature He created. I use that time to thank Him, ask for help throughout the day, and bring needs—mine and others’.
When I get back home, I turn on worship music and keep it playing throughout the day. Praising God helps me keep my focus on Him and creates an atmosphere of peace. As I take these intentional steps to draw closer to God, I find that His presence and guidance help me through even the busiest days.
Build a Daily Relationship with God
That’s how I build a daily relationship with God, but you can choose your own ways to grow closer to Him. Some people use daily devotional plans to grow closer to God, which helps them stay focused and consistent. There are several free online devotionals and Bible reading plans available, including those on Andrew Wommack’s website (awmi.net).
Signs That You’re Growing Closer to God
As you take steps to draw closer to God, you may wonder if they are working. One of the clearest signs that you’re growing closer to God is peace becoming more present in your heart and overflowing into every part of your daily life. When you read God’s Word and believe what it says, you begin applying it to your life, and you start seeing victory.
I hope you’re encouraged to draw closer to God and experience the blessings that come from a close relationship with Him.
