Believing Big: Understanding the God of the Impossible and How to Strengthen Your Faith

Faith is more than belief—it’s a way of life. Join us this weekend and see how God’s love moves through our church family.

Pastor Lawson Perdue

Years ago, I decided to start believing big, and I’m excited to share some lessons from the God of the impossible! God is not a respecter of people. What He has done for me, He will do for you if you start believing big, too.

Let’s start by looking at what the “God of the impossible” means. When we say something is impossible, we evaluate our own power and limits and conclude that it isn’t humanly possible. But God is not limited to our natural laws. He is able to do what we can’t even imagine.

Ephesians 3:20 tells us, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us.” I’m glad God isn’t limited to my thinking, and I’m constantly challenging myself with these words: Don’t limit God!

Through Him, Anything Is Possible

Here are some Bible verses about God doing the impossible:

  • Mark 10:27 Jesus, looking at them, said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God. For with God all things are possible.”
  • Genesis 18:14  Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time, I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
  • Jeremiah 32:17 Ah, Lord God! Truly, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm, and there is nothing too hard for You.

Facing Difficulty Means Following the Right Path

Why does God allow impossible situations? I’ve learned that when I face difficulty, it is important for me to remember that problems don’t mean that God is not with me or unable to help me. The impossible situations are likely a sign that I’m on the right track, taking ground for the kingdom of heaven. I like to say, “If you don’t bump into the enemy, it might be because you’re both going in the same direction.”

I love what 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, most gladly I will boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” Whenever I face something that, in the natural world, looks impossible, I know that this test will be a great testimony of God’s faithfulness and ability to work miracles.

We see the principle that the God of the impossible shows up to rescue His people throughout the Bible. Most people are familiar with the Bible account of Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). However, few people read the ending verses of Chapter 6 after God miraculously saved Daniel from an impossible situation.

We learn in Daniel 6:25–27 that King Darius sent a proclamation to every area of his vast kingdom explaining what Daniel’s God did and praising Him. Daniel believed big, and the whole kingdom heard about it! Daniel’s test was a huge testimony that everyone heard about!

The Importance of Continued Faith

How can someone have faith when life feels impossible? It is important to remember that operating in faith means you are not waiting until you see something to believe it. Many people never see a miracle because they wait to see something start to happen before they believe it is possible.

In 2 Corinthians 5:7, it says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” We need to apply our imagination positively to believe BIG that God can and will help us.

When faced with what seemed like an impossible situation of removing a demon from a boy, Jesus told His disciples, “…if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there, and it will move.’ And nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:20).

I’m glad I can put my mustard-seed-sized faith in Jesus doing the impossible, rather than faith in myself to fix the situation.

How Can Someone Apply Faith in Impossible Situations?

For me, I look to God’s grace, and that’s how I apply faith in impossible circumstances. Grace is undeserved and unearned, and means that Christ did for me what I could not do for myself. Because Jesus died on the cross to pay for all sins, we reap the benefit of eternal life when we place our faith in Him. I know that I deserve punishment, but instead I receive the righteousness of Christ and have all authority to use the name of Jesus—hallelujah! I apply faith in the God of the impossible to do the impossible, and so can you!
