Romans: The Revelation of Righteousness Part 7 Transcript

Praise the Lord friends. Today, we’re gonna be in Romans chapter seven. I have my son Aaron here, and you’re gonna get great revelation that will revolutionize the way you live your life. When Paul says I don’t wanna do it, but I do it anyway. And what I wanna do, I don’t, he is not talking about the normal Christian experience. If you’re living like that, you’re either not saved or religion has messed with you. So open your heart and receive a good word today. Bless you. Praise the Lord friends. I am so glad that you’re here today. We’re gonna be sharing Romans chapter seven, which is so controversial in some areas of the Christian faith. Paul makes a statement in Roman seven verse 19, and he says the good that I would do, I do not but the evil, which I would not, that I do. That is not the normal Christian experience. That is talking about a person in Paul’s case who was not saved, who was a legalistic person, who was trying to please Christ in their own strength as an unbeliever. And you cannot live the Christian life in your own strength. You cannot live the Christian life without the Christ life. And so many people think that’s the normal Christian experience. It’s just not it. And if you begin to really understand the gospel, it will deliver you from that kind of thinking and that kind of living. Amen. Let’s go back. Paul is talking about in Roman six, seven, and eight how we live since we have been born again, since we’ve believed on Jesus, since we left the reign of sin and death and came into the reign of grace and righteousness. We are to reign in life like kings, that’s Romans chapter five, verse 17. Now in Roman six, he says, we don’t let sin have dominion over us anymore. Why? Because we’re dead to it. We’re free from it. We have authority over it and plainly we know it’ll kill you. But not only do we not lean to let sin reign in our life, we’ve got a guard against legalism. And he talks about in the first six verses that we are not only dead to sin, but in Roman seven verse one through six, he talks about how we’re dead to the law and we’re freed from the law. So we’re not only dead to sin free from sin, we’re dead to the law and free from the law.

I like that he uses marriage as an example, that you can’t be married to the law and married to Jesus at the same time, that’s a polygamy. There’s too many Christian polygamists today. People who are married to trying to be righteous through rule keeping. You can’t, either Christ set you free or law keeping set you free. You’re either married to one or the other.

Either Jesus saved you or you saved you, but not Jesus and you saved you and you can’t save yourself. So you need Jesus and you still need Jesus. Praise God. Now, when you begin to understand this being married to the law, being religious and married in… I grew up in a legalistic church and it is deadly. It is awful.

Well, I think from a lot of Paul’s letters that he wrote to a lot of church, a lot of people started out in grace, but then started going back to their former husband, to their former–

That’s what he’s talking about. And he talks about that we died to the law so that we can live to Christ. And so he’s like, listen, when you’re saved, you’re married to Jesus now. And being married to the law, it’s like having this demanding demeaning husband, you can never do enough to please him. The more you work the more demanding he gets and it’s awful. And so I use an example like that and he talks about this when I teach in Bible school and I find some unmarried people and I get a beautiful young girl, and then I’ll get a young man up there. And I’ll say, now this person, he was raised in a very strict home, a perfect home, but she was raised in an average home and they got married and they were looking for life happily ever after. But just the more she did, the more she failed, the more she tried, the more she failed, the more and that’s legalism. That’s what I grew up in. It’s like, get saved, repent, don’t sin, repent, repent, repent. And the more that you try to keep these religious rules and regulations, the more they add onto it. You can never pray enough, read enough, go to church enough. You can never… And some of these old legalistic churches, man, they are in church so much. It would be hard for them to get anybody saved. And I’ve got, man, we need to get set free. There’s a world that needs Jesus, hallelujah. And everything. I say it being a Pentecostal that everything, and I’m a Pentecostal. So I say this lovingly, okay. But I say being a Pentecostal, the only thing you can do is, and not sin is eat, but the Bible talks about gluttony and it talks about in the same verse that it talks about drunkenness. And so you’ve gotta watch out for gluttony as well as drunkenness. I mean, it’s just crazy. They make everything seem. So let’s talk about this, Roman seven one through six. Go ahead, Aaron and read Roman seven verse one through six.

No you not brethren for I speak to them that know the law, how that the law has dominion over a man, as long as he lives. For the woman, which has a husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he lives. But if the husband be dead, she’s loose from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulterous, but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law so that she is no adulterous though she be married to another man. Where for my brethren, you also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ, that you should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God for when we were in the flesh, the emotions of sin, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit under death. But now we are delivered from the law. That being dead, where in we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

So what he is saying is that the law can’t save you. And before you came to Christ as a religious person, Paul is talking about his own life. You were trying to do what was right. He talks about in Philippians chapter three, concerning the righteousness of the law, I was blameless. I was circumcised the eighth day of the tribe of Benjamin all these different things. I was zealous for God, but yet he was still a sinner. He wasn’t born again. And he makes this statement in verse five and says, when we were in the flesh, in that verse, he in his own aspect, he’s talking about, he wasn’t saved, the motions of sin, which were by the law, worked in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. And so, even though he was trying to keep all this law, he was still a sinner. He makes it very clear. Then in Romans eight verse 8 He says the same thing then that are in the flesh cannot please God. You cannot please God, without Jesus and the spirit of Christ living on the inside.

I like when Paul in the book of Acts, when he was sharing his testimony to king of Agrippa, he talked about who he was before he met Jesus. And he talked about just on the road to Damascus, what happened to him. But he said before he met Jesus, he used these specific words that he was filled with exceeding rage.

That’s terrible.

So I think law keeping, and the further you go into that, religious just rule following whatever type of system it is, whether it be… It’s not gonna bring peace, it’s gonna bring that exceeding rage is what Paul said–

It does. And you know what if you’re mad all the time, you need to get over it. Pastor Lawson included. And sometimes you not pastor at church and people do the darnest thing. Believers do the darnest thing sometimes. And sometimes it’s challenging, but you know what? We cannot impose our standards on somebody else. They have to have a heart revelation of things so that they can really change. And if they don’t have a heart revelation of it, they’re just gonna change anyone–

Keep trusting God’s grace for your life.

Amen. And God’s grace for other people’s lives that exceeding rage is caused when we maybe have an understanding that is different than somebody else’s understanding of something, but we’ve gotta die to the law, die to legalism so that we can live to Jesus and let Jesus just live his life through us. And so in Roman seven, he goes on and talks about this. So what he says, we need to look really closely at verse four and verse six of Roman 74, we move forward. But he says, my brethren, we are become dead to the law by the body of Christ. So when we identify with Christ and his death, we not only died as sin, but we die to the law. He says so that we can be married to another, even to him, Jesus, who is raised from the dead, that we would bring forth fruit to God. So the only way you can really bring forth fruit is being married to Jesus. And it’s not my thou shall not, praise God. It’s through understanding the life of the spirit. What happened to me when I first got spirit filled and begin to get a revelation of who I was in Christ. I begin to realize it’s not in not doing all these things, but we get to serve God. We get to love our brother. And it changed the way I lived instead of trying to just don’t sin, don’t sin, don’t sin. I was caught up with loving and living for Jesus. And he goes on and says this in verse six, but now delivered from the law. We’ve been not only died to it, but we’re free from it. That being dead wherein we were held, we should serve in newness of spirit. Again, we let the spirit take over. And why do I go to church? Why do I give, what I read my Bible? Why do I pray? Why do I love my brother? I do that not because I have to, but because I want to. Praise God. If I did this because I had to, I’d be miserable. Well, it’s kind of like, I like what Romans 12 verse one says, it says a lot of people know this verse. It says, present your bodies as a living sacrifice totally acceptable under God, which is your reasonable service. I mean can look at that in a legalistic way. And I’ve heard this kind of taught that way. You better present yourself as a living sacrifice onto God and people make jokes and say, well, the problem with living sacrifices is they like to get off the altar, but really understanding the grace of God. And that he’s made us righteous is it’s actually an honor. It’s a privilege. It’s something that we get to do to get to be a living sacrifice. In the Old Testament, a sacrifice, it had to be perfect, the priest had to be perfect. They wore these crowns that said holiness under the Lord. And it was an honor to serve as a priest. So now that we’re a living sacrifice, it’s not something that you better do this. This it’s something that’s an honor. That your perfected, you now can be a living sacrifice.

God’s never had anybody qualified working for him yet, but it’s the blood of Jesus that qualifies us to be ministers, to serve God, to do. And we gotta get that understanding. I love what you’re talking about in Romans 12, and we’ll get there. And the first 11 chapters of Romans talk about God’s plan of righteousness for the Gentiles and the Jews and the gospel being the revelation of righteousness. But the last five chapters of Romans, Romans 12 through 16 and Romans 12 one and two are transitional verses, talk about now that we’ve received the righteous life of Jesus, we let that righteous life of Jesus. We live that out and we do that as we renew our mind in the word of God.

And Paul, I mean the way he writes his letters, Romans included, he starts off with just great, just powerful truths that he’s had just concerning faith and grace and righteousness. But then at the end of his letters, go on to how does this apply? Just that’s the same form, a lot of great preachers follow when they’re preaching a message, they’ll tap on, what do you do with this? How does apply to your life? And that’s what Paul does here as well.

That is a great revelation. And that’s the truth. Now in Romans seven verse seven, he goes on and talks about since we’re dead to the law and free from it, and how do we begin to live? What shall we say then is the law sin, God forbid, he asks these questions all again. God forbid, no, I had not known sin except by the law. So the law is good for an unrighteous man. It’s made for sinners and lawless and disobedient. It talks about that in first Timothy chapter one, and the law was given to show a person they’re sin. So when they’d come to Christ, Galatians three says it’s our school master to bring us under Christ. But then we believe on Jesus and it’s not by law keeping that we’re safe. So he said, I had not known sin except by the law for I had not known lust, except the law said you shall not covet, but sin took occasion. This is the problem with law keeping. Sin took occasion by the commandment and worked in me all manner of concupiscence or evil desire, for without the law sin was dead. So sin really didn’t have a lot of power without the law, but the Bible actually says this in first Corinthians 15 verse 56, it says the law is the strength of sin. And if you preach the law, it will actually make sin stronger. And I know when I first started out pastoring and I understood a lot about faith, I understood grace and ideology but I had no revelation of it. And I had this great man come to me after about six months or a year into my ministry in my church. And I respected him. I honored him and he said, I’m really struggling. Well, I understand right now while he was struggling this, because I was teaching a lot more about what we do about the faith side of the gospel than about grace. But when you understand grace back then probably 90% of my preaching was on faith and 10% on grace. And I still preach on grace and faith, but I preach 90% about what Jesus has done and 10% about what we do in response. Friends I’ve been teaching from my series on “Romans: The Revelation of Righteousness.” Romans is actually my favorite book of the Bible. And I teach this class. I’ve been teaching it for years at Charis Bible College in Woodland Park with Andrew Wommack. And so I’m teaching about the gospel is the revelation of righteousness. You wanna get ahold of this? I love, our ministry we are connected to other great faith ministries. And we often have Mark Hankins here at the church. Who’s a great faith preacher, but he really understands the grace of God, really understands the love God.

He has a tremendous revelation of righteousness and Jesse Duplantis too. I remember I was at Dr. Sumralls one time and it’s after I got a revelation of grace and I was at camp meeting and they brought this guy in and he preached on a Tuesday night. A fantastic message. It was a fantastic message. And I know he got it from a brother that taught at Charis Bible College, ’cause I heard him teach it. And the next day on Wednesday morning, he taught a terrible message. It was so bad I almost had to walk out and it has to be really bad that it was just all legalism and performance. And he was in Galatians five and he said, the last good thing he said was about Galatians chapter five, verse 18, but he talking about freedom, but he went right into performance and it was terrible. And that night Jesse Duplantis came and Jesse preached and he preached in 1st John chapter four verse 18, the perfect love cast out all fear. And I stood up, I was way back in the church. There were about 3000 people there and I said, amen. And it was just so refreshing because it was just a complete difference. And it was teaching grace and said a lot. And Jesse pointed at me and he said that man, I was way back in the auditorium. He said, that man knows what I’m talking about. And Jesse’s had these discussions with me. You’ve been there on 1st John chapter three, verse six through verse 10. And it’s hard to understand if you don’t understand grace, but if you begin to understand that we’re a spirit, soul and body, and Paul is not only talking about what we do. He’s talking about who we are. And you have to understand that when you understand the gospel. And he talks about both of those things in 1st John three verse six through verse 10, but he’s talking about whoever’s born of God, does not sin. That’s talking about your spiritual condition as a believer. And Jesse, I understood back. This was years and years ago, over 30 years ago, when he’s preaching for Lester Soma. I knew that that man had a revelation of grace, but at the same point in time, there’s a lot of people today that don’t have a revelation of grace.

That’s true.

Man, you get a revelation of grace and it’ll revolutionize your life. And Mark Hankins preach a lot on righteousness and right standing. And he talks about being blood blessed and qualified. I’ve passed the test. Oh, he has a coffee cup that has that on it. And I was drinking out of it this morning early. And you know what, that is the gospel. That’s righteousness by faith. That’s the grace of God.

When I was 18 and moved outta the house, I went to school in Pittsburgh. And for a while I took a few months to try to find a church, but I visited a really big church. I think it might have been the largest church in Pittsburgh at the time, but they had a guest minister.

[Lawson] Same one.

I didn’t know that, but he preached a very legalistic message. I was taking really diligent notes. It’s funny ’cause my wife Heather, she found my old journal from when I was 18 and she found the notes I was taking that Sunday and he was preaching that it’s not the love of God that keeps you out of sin. The fear of God. So he is actually preaching against the love of God. And I don’t know, she just said she was looking at my notes and just an all caps are out disagree. And she thought it was really funny.

You called me that afternoon, about three o’clock Colorado time. So it would’ve been five in Pittsburgh. And you said, dad, do you know this guy? And I said, yes I do. And I never told you about him ’cause I wanted you to get this. You were going there and I saw he was gonna be there. And I wanted to see, and that person sense that has got a revelation of grace and now preaches the grace of God. And he’s made a complete turnaround from that. But you said he was talking about how the fear of God will keep you out of sin, but the love of God won’t. And you said, dad, that is wrong. He said, you are my dad and you love me and because you love me, I respect you. And I wanna do what you want me to do. He said, it’s the same way with God. I know that God loves me. And because of that, I respect him and I wanna do what God wants me to do. He said, therefore, the fear of God grows out of the love of God and it will keep you out of sin. You were 18. I was so excited because I knew at that point in time that you had a revelation of righteousness, that you had a revelation of grace. And that’s why you went to these secular colleges and you never got up caught up in all this sin that was going on all around you. Praise God, because you understood the grace of God. I was so excited. I’m still excited thinking about it today. Hallelujah, that 20 years ago, going to God. Amen, awesome. Not 20, but close to it. Hallelujah. And so he goes on and he says, this is the problem with law keeping and sin takes occasion but the commandment creates evil desire. I was alive without the law of sin, but when the commandment came to laws of strength of sin, it says 1st Corinthians 15:6, sin revived and I died. He said for sin took occasion by the commandment, deceive me and slew me we’re for the laws. Holy commandments, Holy just in good. There’s not a problem with the law. The law was made for sinners to show them they’re sinners, to show them they needed savior. But he said that which was good, was made dead to me, God forbid, but sin that might appear sin in verse 13, working death in me by that which is good. So that sin by the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. We don’t want you to sin more. We want you to sin less. How do you get there? Understand that you are the righteousness of God, that your spirit is perfect. That you’re pure, that you’re sanctified by the blood of Jesus. When you understand that you begin to reflect on that and live in a different way. He says where we know that the law is spiritual. There’s not a problem with the law. The problem was with me, but I’m carnal, I’m fleshly, I’m sold under sin. Before you receive Jesus you’re a sinner. We talked about yesterday, Romans 6:23, the wages of sin, Romans 5:12 says we were born in sin. So we were born in sin. We were worked in, we came by sin, honestly, but at the same point and time, since we’ve been saved, we’ve been made the righteousness of God in Christ. And he says, this is verse 15 to verse 20. And most people think this is the normal Christian life. This is not the normal Christian life. He says for I do that, I allow not when I would I don’t do, what I hate I do. If I do that, that I don’t wanna do. Now, I consent to the law that it’s good in verse 16, verse 17. Now, then it’s no more me that do it but sin that dwells in me, for I know that in me, that is in my flesh dwells no good thing. I cannot do this in my own strength apart from Jesus for the will is present with me, but how to perform that, which is good I find not. You cannot live the Christian life without the Christ life, which he moves into in Romans eight. He says for the good that I would do not, but the evil, which I would not, that I do, that is not the normal Christian experience. If you’re living like that, either you’re not born again or legalism has messed you up.

I like verse 24. He says, oh, wretched man that I am, kind of talking about this state of trying to become righteous through law keeping. We sing these songs, like I was a wretch. We just sing–

[Lawson] That before you got saved.

Well and people too, like wretchedness can come from just.

I don’t even like the sing it.

Sinful living or also here he’s talking about wretchedness coming from trying to be righteous on your own.

Now let’s read here verse 20.

There’s a religiousness wretchedness as well.

Yes. He said for if I do that, I would not. There’s no more I that do it but sin that dwells in me. If I find a law then that I would do good. Evil is present with me for I delight in the law of God, two laws working after the inward man, the law of God that God loves you. Amen. That God sent Jesus to save you. But I see another law working in my members, working against the law of my mind, bringing me into captivity, the law of sin, which is in my members. So he’s saying, man, you’re a sinner you need save. And the law shows you the mosaic law, right. Will show you that sin. Oh, wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from the body of this death. And then he answers that. And what’s he say?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. So Jesus will deliver you. He will free you from this bondage, from this slavery, from this old legalistic living, from this old death life, he’ll free you. He says for with my mind, I serve the law of God. That is that I know that God loves me. And I know that he sent Jesus to save me. But with the flesh, the law of sin, I know that I’m a sinner and I need a savior. And so what I do, I got saved. I believed on Jesus. And when I believed on Jesus, what happened? Everything changed. I became a brand new creation in Christ. One that was never in existence before, praise God. And when you understand that it liberates you. When you understand that you’re the righteousness of God in Christ, that you’re sanctified by the blood of Jesus. That you’re justified. That means that you live just like you never sin. And that’s what he said in Romans 5:1 therefore being justified by faith. We’re at peace with God. You begin to live in the spirit and live at peace with God. That’s how God wants us all to live. So make sure you tune in tomorrow and here are my favorite chapter of the Bible and my favorite scripture in that chapter, Roman chapter eight, verse 11, the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you and quickens your mortal body. Boy, that’s marvelous. Isn’t it? Praise God. So my favorite book is Romans. Amen. My favorite chapter is Romans chapter eight. Amen. And my favorite verse is Romans chapter eight, verse 11. We have the exact same spirit that raised up Jesus from the dead living in us. And that changes the way we live. Amen. Because his grace has taken up residents in us. Amen.
