Praise the Lord, friends. I am so glad that you are connected with us today. I’m here and I have my son, Aaron here, we’re gonna be sharing today, continuing our series on Romans, the “Revelation of Righteousness”, and we are gonna be in Romans chapter five. We’re gonna be talking about leaving the reign of sin and death and coming in to the reign of grace and righteousness by faith in Jesus, so that we reign as kings. Blessings. Friends, I’m so glad that you’re with us today and we are sharing on the book of Romans chapter, we’re beginning today in chapter five, taking off from where we left off last week, we shared on Romans chapter one, The Gospel is the Revelation of Righteousness. And if you have no revelation of righteousness, you have no understanding of the gospel. But when you get a hold of the revelation of righteousness, it will revolutionize your life. Then in Romans chapter one, the end of the chapter, we talked about the Gentile need for righteousness, how they were caught up in philosophy, adultery, lust, all kinds of ungodliness. And then in Romans two, we talked about the Jewish or the church goers, the religious persons, need for righteousness. They were caught up in legalism. They make their boast in the law, says in verse 23, “But through breaking the law, they dishonor God.” Then Romans chapter three we said, “Everyone needs righteousness, there’s no unrighteous, no, not one,” but God made righteousness available in the person of Jesus and He sent Jesus to declare His righteousness for the remission of the sins that are passed. Nobody can boast, but because of the law, faith, and then in Romans four, we talked about this, that you receive righteousness by grace through faith. David is an example of grace because he really needed grace. And Abraham is an example of faith because he really needed faith. And by faith, Abraham received righteousness. And that’s how we receive righteousness today is by faith. Now, in Romans chapter five, what Paul goes into here is that when we put faith in Jesus, we leave the reign of sin and death and we go into the reign of grace and righteousness by faith in Jesus. So he talks about that in verse 17, also, he talks about that in verse 21, but we wanna begin today right here in Romans 5:1, where the scripture says, “Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord, Jesus Christ.” I love the New King James of this. It says, “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God.” We’ve already been justified by faith. So the moment that you put faith in Jesus, you are justified just as if you’d never sinned and you are at peace with God. That is the good news of the gospel.
That’s awesome, I love that.
Praise the Lord. Now, when you put this faith in Jesus, praise God, and you’re at peace with God, He goes on to say in verse two, “By Jesus, we have access by faith in the grace where in we stand and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” So we have access into the good things of God. And when you have received the righteousness of God and you’re justified by faith, then righteousness becomes a foundation in your life for all the promises of God. So says we have access by faith into grace wherein we stand. It’s important that we understand that we stand in grace, so we don’t stand on, “I’m so good and I’ve read my Bible and I prayed and I went to church and I gave”, we stand on Jesus. Praise God went to the cross. Jesus shed His blood, Jesus covered our sins, Jesus paid for our righteousness and our health and our peace, praise God.
In the Old Testament the glory of God was really seen in the Holy of Holies of the temple, where the arc of the covenant was and it was hard to get access to the Holy of Holies, you couldn’t just be anyone and have access there, but now we have access to the very presence of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Right, so the glory of God, when we talk about it, you study the glory of God, and you’re talking about how they had access into the most holy place where the arc of the covenant was. There’s really three things that talk about the glory of God. One of them is the presence of God. That arc represented the presence of God among His people, and God’s throne room was there, that was His presence among people. Also, and remember when Solomon built the temple and they dedicated it, when they brought the arc in and brought it into the holy place and they were celebrating, the priest could not stand to minister by reason that the glory of God had filled the house. So that was talking about the presence of God. The arc also talks about, or the glory talks about the power of God. And Jesus said this in John 11:40, just before Lazarus was raised from the dead, “If you believe, you’ll see the glory of God.” And a little bit later, He cried, “Lazarus come forth,” and Lazarus came forth, bound hand and foot in grave clothes. It was literally the power of God blew him outta that grave, blew him outta that tomb and praise God, it was a cave, hallelujah. And he was bound and Jesus said, “Loose him and let him go.” And then the third thing, when we talk about the glory of God, so it’s the presence of God, it’s the power of God, it’s also the purpose of God. The scripture talks about this in I Corinthians chapter 15, it says there’s one glory of the sun, moon, and the stars. And what he’s talking about, there’s a purpose. There’s a God given purpose for the sun, the moon, the stars. He says there’s a glory of celestial things, heavenly things, also a glory of earthly things. So if we wanna move into the purposes of God, the presence of God, the power of God, we move into it by faith in His grace. And he says by Jesus we have access by faith. So faith is like the door or faith is like the key that unlocks the door into the grace of God. Really two things we need to receive all the promises of God. Grace is what God provided when Christ died and rose again, and faith is our positive response toward the gospel. So when you’re justified by faith, you access the grace of God and the good things that are provided by grace through faith, Amen.
I love that.
Praise God. And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. So we’re looking for good things to come. Now, what happens when you’re believing for good things to come, you’re believing for the power of God, presence of God, you know, you’re believing for the purposes of God to be released, and then you run up against some trouble. And he goes on and talks about that in verse three through verse five, he says, “Not only so, but we glory in tribulation, we glory in trouble.” He says, “Knowing that tribulation works patience.” If you will patiently believe God when you’re facing trials, you’re gonna experience the goodness of God, you’re gonna experience the love of God. Experience works hope, and you can hope in the goodness of God, hope in the love of God, and hope makes not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our heart by the Holy Ghost. So you know what? We believe God for good things, but if we’re believing God for good things and trouble comes, did you, we keep believing God. And we keep looking for the glory of God. James talks about this a little bit, in James chapter one, he says in verse two, “My brethren count it all joy when you fall into different kind of temptations or trouble. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience, but let patience have her complete work, entire work, that you may be complete and entire, wanting nothing”. So if you’ll patiently believe God when trouble comes, you’ll see the glory of God. You’ll see the promises of God performed.
I think it’s important to note too, that just because these verses like in Romans 5:3, talking about rejoicing in tribulation and James is talking about counting all joy when you fall into these trials, just because we rejoice when we’re going through something, it doesn’t mean that God sends those trials. Some people kind of screw up their theology and say, well, I can rejoice in these trials, so these trials must be from God, but God does not try people with evil.
And that’s exactly what James goes on to say. He says, “No man when he is tempted, is tempted by God.” And he goes on to say, “Every good and every perfect gift comes down from the Father of light, with whom there’s no variableness nor shadow of turning.” In James 1:17, in verse 16, he says, “Do not ere,” exactly what you’re saying here, “Do not ere my beloved brother.” Don’t turn from this trouble. It’s from the devil. God did not send the trouble. God did not send the problem. We can rejoice because we know God, because we know God’s good. And because we have hope in the gospel.
Yeah, I think that’s really important to note because I think a large percentage of Christians really think that well, because I can rejoice in trials, that means that the trials come from God, and God’s trying to teach me to rejoice and teach me patience and teach me. You can grow in patience, you can grow in faith, you can grow in rejoicing, but that doesn’t mean trials come from God. God does not try people with bad things.
God is not the author of evil. We used to have a teaching that’s so powerful. And I don’t say it a lot anymore, but we should talk about it. And that’s that we don’t blame God. And so many people, because they’ve been taught all this false teaching on sovereignty, and you got some things to say about this, but they’ve been taught this false teaching on sovereignty, they just believe that everything that comes must be from God and it’s like, they don’t even understand. Jesus said it like this in John 10:10. He said, “It’s the thief that comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come to give you life and give it to you more abundantly.” So good comes from God and evil comes from the devil. Praise God.
You’ve seen this in church you were in for a period of time, but talk a little bit about your focus, your understanding of that.
Yeah just a lot of people do kind of have this Calvinistic type of thinking about things that God just controls everything. And God, God really doesn’t control everything, He’s given people free will and bad things happen on this earth just because the effect of sin on this world and also people have free will so people can harm other people and it’s because they have the will to do so and it’s not God that controls every individual person’s will.
Yeah. You have a great story about that while you’re in college, you had a friend that literally believed that.
Yeah, yeah. So I had a good friend who was very Calvinistic and just believed that God controlled everything and I said, well, if I punched you right now, you couldn’t get mad at me because God made me punch you. So it’s, there’s a lot of holes in that theology.
I mean some people believe it to the point that if they go sin that God made them sin. And that’s exactly what James teaches against. And James says God is not the author of sin. God is not the author of death, of destruction, of sickness, of poverty, of lack, all that is a result of sin. Now God loved us when we were in sin. And that’s what he goes on to talk about in Romans 5, beginning in verse six through verse 11, that God loved us when we were in sin. But not only that God loved us when we were in sin, God loves us now that we’ve been justified. Why don’t you read verses six through verse 11 here in Roman’s chapter five.
It says, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die, yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die, but God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, much more than being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him, for if we were enemies, when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His son, much more being reconciled we shall be saved by His life and not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”
So when you look at that, it says that God demonstrated His love toward us while That we were yet sinners. So when we were doing all the wrong things, making all the wrong choices, Jesus died for us. Now, most people believe that, but here’s where they get hung up. He goes on and says this in verse nine, in verse 10, he says, “Much more than being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” Now that we’ve been saved, we’re gonna be delivered from wrath, determined lasting anger, through Him. See a lot of people think, man, now, since you’ve been saved, if you don’t pray, if you don’t go to church, if you don’t tithe, if you don’t love your neighbor, if you, now, those things are all good, and we should do them as a result of our faith in Jesus, as a result of the righteousness of God, as a result of the grace of God, but our salvation is not based on our performance. Our salvation is based solely on the performance of Jesus and His work. And he goes on and says this in verse 10, “If when we were enemies, we were reconciled or restored to right relationship with God by the death of His son, much more now that we’ve been restored to right relationship. Now that we’ve been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” Now that’s a powerful element in itself and we’ll come back right after a short break and share about being saved by the life of Jesus. We appreciate you. Praise the Lord, friends. We’ve been sharing from Romans chapter five, and we were talking about how God demonstrated His love toward us. It talks about this in Romans 5:8, “To us while we were yet sinners, Jesus went to the cross for us. When we were in sin, when humanity was in sin, when we were making all the wrong choices and doing all the wrong things. And if He loved us in that state, He goes on and tells us, much different than many churches teach, He tells us that now that we have been justified, we’re gonna be safe from determined lasting anger from wrath through Him. So a lot of people teach, well, you were saved when you were a sinner, but if you don’t clean up your act, then you’re gonna get it. You know, well, that’s just not true. And he says here that Christ died for the ungodly in verse six, so Jesus died for us when we were in sin. God demonstrated His love toward us in sending Christ to the cross. Christ endured the cross, despising the shame. Hebrews 12:1-3 talks about it, and is now set down. It says, “For the joy that was set before Him,” He’s now set down on the right hand of God, but He goes on and says, “If we were restored to God, restored to right relationship by the death of His son, much more now that we’ve been restored to right relationship will be saved by His life,” in verse 10. So if we go back to Romans 4:25, this is a transitional verse. And Paul says, “Jesus was delivered for our offense. He was delivered for our transgression for our sin, but he was raised again for our justification.” Praise God, we can live just like we never sinned. And we can receive from God, just like we’ve never sinned. That is a foreign thing in the minds of most people.
Well, to me, Romans 4:25, talking about being delivered for our offenses and raised for our justification, you know when Christ died on the cross, that blood wiped away all your sins. So like if all your sin was recorded on a whiteboard, that’d be like it was just all erased. But it says when Christ was raised again for your justification, that means you don’t just have a blank slate, you’ve now received His righteousness. And to me that’s what the resurrected, you’ve now received the power of God. So you’re not just wiped clean, but you received the life of Christ.
Amen. We need to live on the right side of the cross. And a lot of people are living on the backside of the cross.
They’re trying to live the Christian life without Jesus, without the life of Christ.
Without the spirit of Christ. They’re trying to do it in their own strength and it’s impossible to do that. That goes back to Romans four, where Paul says in Romans 4:6, he says, “David describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness without work.” So when you’re saved, God imputes the righteousness of God, this’ll fit really good with the last part of Romans chapter five. But then he’s saying, “Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” That’s what happened when we believed on Jesus. But then he says in verse eight, and this is what you’re talking about in Romans four, “Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.” So God is not laying sin on our account. Now, if we go to Romans 5:11 here, where we’re at, he says, “Not only so, we joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” I love the Greek word for this word atonement. It’s the Greek word katallage, and it means an exchange. It’s a payment of equal values, money changers. And so what Jesus did is not only paid for our sin, He overpaid for our sin. So Jesus, in His shed blood, paid for all of our sin, overpaid for all of our sin. And there’s nothing that we could do to earn our salvation, but not only have we received righteousness for sin, see there’s an exchange that was made. We were given His righteousness. Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made Him to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God.” So Jesus never sinned, but God made Him to be a sin offering for us that we might be made the very righteousness of God. So it’s not by our performance, it’s by His grace that we are made the righteousness of God. So we receive righteousness for sin, in the same way we receive healing and health for sickness. “He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our inequities, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed,” Isaiah 53:5. First Peter 2:24 says, “Who is own self bear our sin and His own body on the tree that we being dead to sin should live under righteousness by who’s stripes you were already healed.”
Someone just sent the church a message actually, not too long ago, saying that they read an article on a big Christian website. I believe they had a magazine that said that verse is talking about just healing in your soul, not physical healing. And they asked, what did I think about that? Now they already know what we think about it. Like Christ physically healed a lot of people.
Yes. I believe the Greek word there in 1 Peter 2:24. And Peter’s talking about the cross. I believe the Greek word in 1 Peter 2:24, I’m trying to look for it right now, but I believe the Greek word is iaomai and it’s talking about divine healing. He’s talking about He took our sin and He took our sickness on the cross. It ties back to Isaiah 53:4, 5, read that, study it out in the Greek in Isaiah. Study it out in the Greek here in 1 Peter 2:24 the Greek word, when he says, “Who’s by who stripes you were healed,” is the Greek word iaomai and it means to cure, heal, make whole. The same word that’s used when Jesus healed the sick. And also Matthew looked at Jesus healing the sick. In Matthew 8:16, 17, and he said, “This was written to fulfill that which Isaiah spoke, himself took our infirmities and bear our sickness.” Glory to God. And so Jesus, Isaiah looked forward, prophesied about it six to 700 years before the cross, in Isaiah 53, saw Jesus on the cross, taking our sin, taking our anxiety, taking our sickness. Matthew looked at him and said, this is what Jesus is doing. Matthew 8:16,17, study the Greek on it. And then Peter looks back on the cross and said, “This is what Jesus did, He took our sin and our sickness.” That is a sorry excuse for compromising the cross.
Well, it’d be like, it’d be like, let’s say you’re Peter and you lived in ancient, the ancient Roman empire and you went to a doctor, someone who you pay to have iaomai, to have a cure, and you know like, let’s say you have an illness and you pay them for medications and then nothing happens. You say, well, nothing happened, and they’d say, well like they said, they say, “Well, you paid for inner healing. You paid for healing of your soul, so that’s what I did.” So that, that’s actually.
Paul talks about it. And he says, “They have a form of godliness that they deny the power thereof.” And listen, I’ve seen too many people healed by the power of God. I’ve seen too many people set free by the power of God to tell me that that is not included in the covenant, that it’s not included in the gospel. You see, Jesus looked at the lame man in Mark 2, in Matthew 9, and he said, “Cheer up, your sins are forgiven.” And they were questioning Him, forgiving sin. And then He looked at that same lame man, and He said, “Is it easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven or get up and take up your bed and go to your house?'” And the same religion that denied Jesus the authority of forgiving sin when He walked on the earth, denies Jesus the authority of healing bodies today, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And we gotta get away from this powerless gospel and start preaching the full gospel that, praise God, Psalms talks about it, in Psalm 103:3. And he said, “Bless the Lord on my soul and forget not all of His benefits who forgives all of your iniquities and who heals all of your diseases.” It’s the same gospel, praise God, it’s the same Jesus. And He’s still working today and we’re not gonna get through Romans five unless we hurry up. But he talks about, Adam took our sin and brought all men into sin and death and so Jesus lived righteous and brought all men into grace and righteousness. And if you’ll believe it, you can receive it. He says in Romans 5:17, and this is really the heart of this message. “If by one man Adam’s transgression, offense, death reign by one Adam, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ.” And literally if you study that out in the Greek, it says, will reign in life as kings. He goes on and says this in verse 19 to verse 21, we’ll try to finish this up. “For if by one man’s disobedience Adam sinned, many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one, Jesus, many will be made righteous. More over the law entered that the offense might abound, but where sin abounded, grace did much more abound that as sin has reigned to death, sin brought a reign of death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life.” Leads us into a right relationship with God by Jesus Christ our Lord.
I like that.
You know, eternal life, the Bible says in John 17:3, Jesus defined eternal life. And He said, “This is eternal life that they may know the only true God in Jesus Christ, whom thou sent.” Now, if you don’t believe in healing, I love you, Jesus loves you, but you need to get back to believing the Bible and quit believing these man made doctrines. And you know why a lot of people aren’t receiving what the Bible says is because we fail to teach the word of God. We fail to teach what the Bible says, Amen. So we’re gonna keep preaching the gospel, we’re gonna keep preaching the word.
I believe that Christ really does, God really does want you to reign in life and to reign as kings. I like what you said to reign as kings and queens in life. So to do that you need two things. You need the abundance of grace and you also need the gift of righteousness. Like you were saying, you need to understand that, have that revelation of righteousness. If you don’t have that revelation of righteousness, you’re gonna be constantly working for something that God already wants to give you, that He already has given you.
It’s not by our performance. It’s by the performance of Jesus. Praise God that we’re saved, that we’re healed, that we’re set free, that we’re given peace. Thank God for what Jesus has already done.
