Hebrews Transcript

Praise the Lord, friends, and welcome to the broadcast. I have a question for you. Are you perfect? You might be surprised at the answer to this question. But when you really understand the gospel, you will find out that in your spirit, you are perfect before God. And it’s the blood of Jesus that made you that way. Stay tuned and blessings. Friends, I’m so glad that you’re here today. We are teaching from the book of Hebrews. And yesterday we were in Hebrews 9 talking about we have a better sacrifice and a better sanctuary. The sanctuary actually is the body of Christ. And the sacrifice is the blood of Christ. And Hebrews 10 talks about we have a better life. Thank God that Jesus made everything new. We have a better priest, Jesus, in Hebrews 7. We have a better covenant, Hebrews 8. We have a better sacrifice and sanctuary, the blood of Jesus and the body of Christ, and we have a better life.

  Amen.

Thank God for the new covenant. You know, we don’t have to live in condemnation. I even sometimes read, you know, I read through the Bible cover to cover. And I just read it over and over and over again. I never stop, but I can even see that there was a sense of, in the Old Testament, when they were to do, have certain sacrifices for certain sins, it could get it off their conscience and it could help ’em. But you know, this is talking about now. The law was a shadow of those things, but it couldn’t make their conscience perfect. But if you really understand the new covenant, our conscience can be made complete, be made whole, be made perfect. And we don’t have to just constantly live in regret for things of the past because we know what the blood of Jesus has done. You know, Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation. There’s no judgment against those who are in Christ Jesus.”

I love in Hebrews 9, where it talks about the blood of Jesus is able to purge your conscience.

  Yes.

That word for purge, it’s the same word that’s used when Jesus would cleanse a leper.

  Yeah.

Just like that leper would be cleansed, that God can do that. The blood of Jesus has the power to do that to your soul.

  Right.

That’s your mind, your will, your emotions, just your attitudes, your-

  Right.

Your mental health even. You know, the blood of Jesus can purge that just like how Jesus-

  Amen.

Would purge, would cleanse a leper.

Yeah, see, leprosy is a type of sin. It’s contagious, it’s deadly, it’s incurable in the natural, but Jesus healed the leper. Praise God.

And He would touch the leper too.

  Yeah.

He would lay His hands on the leper.

  Right.

Which according to the law, that was actually not allowed. But Jesus would touch the leper and by doing so, He would heal them. You know, Jesus can touch the innermost part of your heart, your conscience, your will, your desires, your dreams. He can touch that and-

  And make it new.

  And make it new.

Yeah. Let’s start here. Hebrews 10:1 he says, “The law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.” What this is saying is, man, when we come into the new covenant, the blood of Jesus made our spirit perfect. You are complete in Him. Who is the head of all principality and authorities. It says that, Bible says that in Colossians 2. He says, “For then, they would not have ceased to be offered.” If they were perfect, they wouldn’t have to continue to sacrifice because the worshipers once purged would have no more consciousness of sin. But in those sacrifices, there is a remembrance again every year made of sins for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats, these Old Testament sacrifices would take away sin. Wherefore, when He came into the world, He said, sacrifice and offering, you would not, but a body you have prepared Me.” God didn’t want sacrifice and offering. God wanted their heart. He said, “In burnt offerings and sacrifices. This is Hebrews 10:6. “For sin, You had no pleasure.” Then said, “Lo, I come in the volume of the book. It is written of me to do Thy will, oh God, above when he said, sacrifice an offering and burn offering, offering for sin, you would not neither had pleasure therein, which are offered by the law. Then I said, “So, I come to do Thy will, oh God. He takes away the first that he may establish the second.” What Jesus is saying, “I came to establish the new covenant.” And it’s like we left the old book. We left the book of the law, and we come into the new covenant. You know, into the finished work. He said, “By the which will, by this new covenant, we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Man, that is a powerful statement. We have been sanctified. That sacrifice was made once for all mankind. That word sanctified in the Greek is the word hagiazo. And it means to sanctify, to purify, to cleanse, to make holy, to dedicate externally and internally. Praise God we have been sanctified by the blood of Jesus. You know, the Bible says this in 1 Corinthians 1:30 that, “Christ of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. That no flesh should glory in his presence.” But it says, “He who glories, let Him glory in the Lord.” Man, we need the glory in the work of Christ. We need to glory in what Christ has already done. That He has finished this work. That we are sanctified by the blood of Jesus. That we are made righteous by the blood of Jesus. That we have the mind of Christ, That we’re redeemed. That we’re purchased by the blood of Jesus. And so he says this new covenant, that’s what it does. And he says in verse 11, “Every priest.” He’s comparing the old covenant and the new covenant. “Every priest stands daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sin.” The Old Testament sacrifice could only appease the wrath of God for a period of time, but it did not take their sin away. But the blood of Jesus took our sin away. The blood of Jesus, our sins were remitted. He says, “But this man, Jesus, after offered one sacrifice for sin forever.” There is one sacrifice for sin forever. “Sat down on the right hand of God.” He completed the deal. He finished it. You are complete in Him who is the head of all principality and authority. It says this in Colossians 2:10. He says, “For from this point, expecting till His enemies be made His footstool.” What Colossians is saying is, Jesus is Lord of heaven. He created all things in Chapter 1. He’s Lord of the earth. He lived on the earth, he had authority on the earth. He died on the cross for our sins. He’s made the head of the body. And then it says, He’s Lord over the grave. Praise God. And we have victory through what He did. He says, “He sat down at the right hand of God expecting His enemies to be made His footstool.” We are to take authority in Christ. We’re to take authority over sin. We’re to take authority over the works of the devil. Praise God. And he says this, “As we begin to understand it, for by one offering.” Now this is powerful in verse 14. “He has perfected them forever that are sanctified.” I want you to know, I didn’t write that. That is one of the most powerful verses in all the scripture. He has perfected, this word perfected in the Greek is the word teleios. And it means He has made perfect, finished, fulfilled, to be perfect, consecrated. It says, “He’s completed, carried out, accomplished, brought to an end, brought to a close by an act or event.” Praise God that that event was the cross. Jesus said when He died on the cross, it is finished. And when he died, His spirit went up to God. The veil in temple was torn in two, signifying, man, this way into the holiest. Now you can come in here, you can live in the presence of God. God wants to live in you. You don’t have to keep making these sacrifices year after year and keep bringing the, I mean, they had to bring sacrifices weekly. They were constantly offering sacrifices. It was expensive. Did you know sin is expensive? But Jesus paid for it all. He paid the one price, the eternal price. He says, whereof this sacrifice that Jesus made in verse 15. “The Holy Ghost as a witness after He said before, this is the covenant I will make with them. After those days, I will put my laws in their hearts and in their minds will I write them and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” Praise God. Our sins are remitted. He says, “Where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin.” Man, our sins are remitted. They’re pardoned as if never committed.

Yeah, and if something’s been paid in full, it’d be foolish to keep trying to make payments on it. You know, some of you maybe bought a house and had to make payments on it. And when the mortgage was paid-

  It’s done.

The bank doesn’t remember it anymore. They’re not gonna come after you because it’s been paid. The debt that you have, the debt that sin created, and sin is a very costly thing. Sin.

  Yeah.

You know, accrues a very large debt, but it has been paid in full through the blood of Jesus. So, you don’t have to make payments towards that. And God doesn’t remember it anymore.

  Yeah.

It’s been paid in full. So, it’d be really foolish to keep making payments on something that’s already been paid in full. Maybe it’s a car, maybe it’s a student loan. But when something’s paid in full, you don’t keep worrying about it.

  Amen.

You don’t keep making payments towards it. You don’t keep questioning whether or not it’s paid in full.

  Hallelujah!

You know it’s paid in full. And even the creditor doesn’t even care because they got what they needed to get. God’s got what he needed to get. The blood of Jesus satisfied that debt.

  Amen.

God is fully satisfied by the offering of Jesus Christ.

Amen. Praise God. What good news! And so many people, you know, they come to the altar crying crocodile tears, just hoping maybe God will forgive them. Their problem is their focus is more on what they’ve done than what Jesus has done. And you’ve gotta get your focus off you and get your focus on Jesus. And that’s what this is really talking about. He goes on and said, This is how we live because of it.” In verse 19, “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus.” Man, we can boldly come into the throne room of God. We can boldly come into the presence of God by a new and living way, which he has consecrated for us. Jesus made that way acceptable. We go in in the presence of God because of what Jesus did through the veil, that is to say His flesh and having a High Priest over the house of God. Jesus today is seated at the right hand of God and He is just waiting for us to come into His presence. He says, “Let us draw a near with a true heart in full assurance of the faith.” Well, how are you gonna have faith? You gotta, you have faith because of what Jesus has already accomplished because He already shed His blood. He already paid the price for our forgiveness and for the promises. And we are forgiven. Praise God. He says, “In full assurance of the faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.” It’s not focused on what we’ve done. It’s not focused on our performance, good or bad. He says, “And our bodies washed with the pure water.” We come with the pure water of the word. Praise God. He says, “Let us hold fast to the profession of our faith without wavering.” Look at this in verse 23. “For He is faithful.” Man, we hold fast to the confession of faith, the profession of faith, what we profess to be because Jesus is faithful. Timothy says, “When we’re unfaithful, He remains faithful because He cannot deny Himself.” Praise God for what Jesus has already done. Praise God. The price has already been paid. That you know, praise God, the sacrifice has already been made, the work has already been done. And all we need to do is believe it.

  Amen.

And just come into the presence of God. Some of you right now are really struggling with condemnation and you know what? You need to let, God forgot about your sin. God got over your sin at the cross. You know what? You need to let it go. Praise God. And so you need to just accept and receive what Jesus has done. We’re gonna take a short break. We’re gonna be back right after this break. And we’ll finish out Hebrews 10. You don’t want to miss this. Praise God. This is amazing revelation. So, stay tuned. We’ll be right back. Blessings. Hi, friends. I’m so glad that you’re watching today. I have my son Aaron with me, and we are teaching on the book of Hebrews. This is one of my favorite books of the Bible. And we have some great teaching available on our website, CharisChristianCenter.com. It’s free of charge, downloadable. “Hebrews The Better Covenant.” “Hebrews Jesus Makes Everything Better.” And my book also, “Hebrews The Better Covenant.”

Say it with me. I can.

  I can.

  Do.

  Do.

  All things.

  All things.

  Through Christ.

  Through Christ.

Who strengthens me. It doesn’t matter who you are. There’s probably been a day or a morning where you just thought, I can’t do it. Maybe as a parent or maybe the job you have or some neighbor you have and you just think, I can’t do it anymore. But I love this. It says I can do it because Christ is with me.

Friends, I’m so glad that you stayed with us. We’re right here in Hebrews 10. We’ve been talking about that we’re sanctified by the blood of Jesus. We’re complete in Christ. The Bible says, “He perfected forever those who are sanctified.” And because of that, today we can come into the presence of God boldly without guilt, without condemnation, without shame. You know, Jesus not only took our sin. He took our shame. And we need to let the blood cleanse us. Amen. We need to let the Spirit of God work in our life and not live in condemnation. You know, so many people, when they come to God, when they pray, they’re focused more on what they’ve done than what Jesus has done. We need to turn that focus and we need to put that focus on Jesus. As long as you have that focus on you, you could never do enough before Christ. And you can never do enough since Christ. You gotta take that focus off of you and put it on Jesus. And say, “Praise God, I am dead to sin.” You know, you were talking about sin and how people get caught up in it. But in Romans 6, what we gotta do is identify. And he said, you know, in Romans 5. Paul talks about in Romans 5 that we went from the reign of sin and death to the reign of grace and righteousness by faith in Jesus. And because of that we’re not to let sin reign anymore in our body. And he talks about that in Romans 6. And he talks about four reasons in Romans 6. We shouldn’t let sin reign. Number one, we’re dead to it. Number two, we’re free from it. Number three, we have authority over it. Number four, it’ll kill you. Sin is deadly. But just like sin will kill you, he says in Romans 7. Legalism will kill you. And they were trying to go back to the law to be justified after they put faith in Christ. And he said, “Don’t do that. Just keep your eyes on Jesus.” Now, let’s move into verse 24 and 25. Look at what he says. Hebrews 10:24. “Let us consider one another to provoke, to love, and good works. Not forsaking the symbol of ourselves together as the manner of some has, but encouraging one another and so much more as we see the day approaching.” The closer we get to Christ coming, the more we should be meeting with one another. We should be encouraging one another. We should be strengthening one another. Amen.

I love these verses here from 22 through 25. These are called the lettuce verses.

  Yeah.

You know, I’ve heard jokes about salad. You know, and lettuce. “But let us draw near with the true heart.” Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.” And so, these are great scriptures. You know, we need to draw nearer to God. There’s nothing holding you back. You need to have this confession of hope without wavering, just trusting God.

  Amen.

He is always faithful. And also, consider one another in order to stir up love in good works.

  Yeah.

You know, when you’re thinking about other people, you should be thinking about how can I help this person? How can I, you’re gonna have to stir up love in yourself sometimes and encourage other people.

  Amen.

That when you come together, it’s to encourage people, not to tear people apart.

  Amen.

To criticize people. To wonder what they’re doing wrong and-

  Yeah.

We should come together and try to really encourage people. You know, one thing I like about you, dad. In your ministry, when I first started preaching seven years ago, you said people, you should always be encouraging. You should always, people should be encouraged when they come together, when they assemble together.

  Amen.

Your messages should be encouraging. And I think that’s just a great, you know, when you go to church you should feel encouraged.

  Yeah.

You should be encouraged by being around other believers, other people full of faith. You know, you should hear a minister who’s, you know, the gospel is an encouraging message.

Amen. I want people to leave feeling better than when they came. And you know, I have a friend and he went to a church that I went to for a period of time and he said, “When I got there, it seemed to me like the pastor was using a bull whip and just beating the sheep.” And I know it was like that, and it’s because he was personally frustrated. But you know what? We don’t want to take our frustrations and anxieties out on other people. People need to be encouraged. And so I want to exhort people. I wanna encourage people. And praise God I have another friend and he went to another church one time and he said, “It was so bad. He came over to my church.” And he said, “Mine was so encouraging. It was the complete opposite.” But he said it was so depressing when he went to this other church. He went to their early service and stopped by my late service. He just said, “I had to get encouraged. It was just terrible what was going on.” But you know what? We should encourage. Now, you’re talking about these verses. Let us in verse 22, let us in verse 23, let us in verse 24. You know, there’s 13 times in Hebrews it says, let us? And there are 13 chapters in Hebrews. And so, Hebrews is really talking about two things. It’s talking about number one, the grace of God and that Jesus has already paid the price for your forgiveness. Jesus has already paid the price for you to receive the promises. But the result of understanding grace, he talks about that in the end of Hebrews 5. But then in Hebrews 6, he says, he moves on in and says, “Be followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” The natural response when you understand the grace of God is to move into faith. You know, Galatians 5:6 says, “In Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything but faith that works by love.” Faith works when you understand the love of God, when you understand the grace of God. And so, what he’s saying is the result of knowing what Jesus has done is that we draw near. That we hold fast, that we encourage each other. That’s the result of understanding the gospel. And he says, “Don’t forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Encourage one another.” Then he says in verse 26, and a lot of people like to leave these verses out, but I’m gonna read ’em and tell you what they mean. He says, “For if we sin willfully after we’ve received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sin. So if I cussed, does that mean that there’s no sacrifice for it? What this is talking about, see, people take this and they don’t read the context. So if you wanna know what it means, you gotta read the context. And the context is verse 29. This is talking about rejecting Jesus. This is not just talking about any sin. And if you read Hebrews, you can’t take this out of the context of Hebrews 6. And there are five specific things that the scripture talks about before you could reject Jesus. And you have to be, you have to be convicted by the Holy Spirit, born of the Spirit, born again, baptized in the Holy Spirit, operate in the gifts of the Spirit and taste of the good word of God. And if you are in that close of intimate, personal relationship with Jesus and reject Jesus, there remains no more sacrifice for sin. So, you gotta take this into context. Verse 29 he talks about this. He says, for how much… What he says, look at verse 27 to verse 29. “For a certain fearful looking of judgment and fiery indignation which will be devour the adversaries. He who despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy who has trodden underfoot the Son of God and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith He sanctified an unholy thing and has done despite to the spirit of grace.” This is talking about rejecting Jesus. And if you’re worried that you’ve committed the unpardonable sin. If you still want to come back to God, you can. If you committed the unpardonable sin, you would have absolutely no desire to come back to God. And he says, “For we know Him.” He says in verse 30, “Who said, ‘Vengeance belongs to Me. I will repay’, says the Lord. And again, the Lord will judge His people. It’s a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But call to remember.” You know what? You need to keep a good conscience before God. You don’t wanna take sin lightly. You don’t wanna just, you know, the challenge with sin is sin hardens your heart to the voice of the Holy Spirit and to God. And the challenge with just living in sin, see, we don’t use grace as a license to sin. Because if you harden your heart, you don’t know when God’s really speaking to you. And so, you don’t want it to sin because sin will take you farther than you go, keep you longer than you wanna stay and cost you more than you wanna pay. Sin is stupid, it’s emotional, it’s deadly, it’s dumb. Stay out of it. Man, praise God. But we need to realize what Jesus has done. And when you understand grace, it doesn’t cause you to sin more. It causes you to sin less because you understand how much He loves you. Your natural response to that is, “I love you, Lord.” And so he goes on and says, “Call to remembrance the former days when you were first saved, and after you were illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions, partly while you were made a gazing stock, both by reproaches and afflictions.” People looked at you and said, “I wonder if this is gonna work.” “And partly while you become companions of those who were so used for you had compassion on me in my bonds and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that you have in heaven a better and enduring substance.” So you kept giving, even though you’re facing challenges. He says this in verse 35, “Cast not away, therefore, your confidence, which has a great repayment of reward for you have need of patience.” This word is talking about that we have need of consistency that after we’ve done the will of God, you might receive the promise. Praise God. He says, “For a little while He will come and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith. But if any man draw back, my soul will have no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who draw back to perdition. We’re not like those who are drawing back to judgment. but to those who believe to the saving of the soul. Praise God. So, we’re not moving back then. We are moving into the things of God. We are moving by faith into the grace of God. Hallelujah. And we’re gonna be talking tomorrow about what faith really looks like. That’s what Hebrews 11 talks about. Praise God. Amen. Jesus has already done the work so we can boldly move forward in faith and receive the things of grace of God has promised.
