Galatians: The Grace of Christ – CD Set

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” – Galatians 5:1

The Galatians: The Grace of Christ Digital Download from Pastor Lawson Perdue. The Apostle Paul is adamant about one thing in Galatians – that after receiving the message of Grace you should not try to live up the standards of the Law. Freedom from the Law will not cause you to live in sin, but it will actually produce a positive relationship with God!

Galatians: The Grace Of Christ Part 2 Transcript

Welcome friends to the broadcast, I’m here with my son Aaron today, and we are sharing on Galatians 3, talking about all the benefits of grace, all the things that grace has provided. And it’s marvelous what Jesus has provided for us through the gospel. And in verse 28, Paul says this, he says, “There’s neither Jew nor Greek, “there’s neither bond nor free, “there’s neither male or female, “for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” We get all the stuff because we’re God’s kids, blessings. Friends, I am so glad that you are connected with us today. And I have my son Aaron, and we are sharing today on Galatians the grace of Christ. And yesterday we talked from chapter one and two about the persistent problem of religion, which is moving away from Jesus. He says in Galatians 1:6, “I marvel that you are so soon removed from Him “who called us into the grace of Christ to another gospel, “which is not another, “though there’d be some who would pervert “the gospel of Christ.” And what he’s really talking about is adding things to Jesus. And he talks about this in Galatians 5, and he says, “I tell you,” in Galatians 5:2, “If you be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.” In other words, if you have to add circumcision or law keeping to Jesus, it’s like saying that Jesus isn’t enough. And we talked about that. We talked about it’s because they really had no revelation. And Paul lived in that for a while until he got a revelation of who Jesus is and what he did. And it caused separation, fear of man, dissension, problems, problems, problems. And but when they got ahold of the true grace of Christ, when he got a revelation of Jesus, it changed his life. And we’re to talk today, in Galatians 3, about the promise of the gospel. And Paul makes a statement in Galatians 3:13 and 14, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law “being made a curse for us. “For its written cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree “that or so that the blessing of Abraham “might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, “that we might receive the promise “of the spirit through faith.” The promise of the gospel really is this, is that now the spirit lives on the inside of us. That was an impossibility before the death and resurrection of Jesus. And in Old Testament saints, the spirit would come on them, but they didn’t have the spirit in them because they were still sinners in a spiritual sense. But praise God because of the gospel, because Jesus shed his blood and washed away our sins. When we believe on Jesus, we are no longer sinners, but we are saints and our spirit has been changed. It’s been made perfect and pure by the blood of Jesus. And now the spirit of Christ can come live on the inside of us.

Even in the Old Testament, I like that you brought up that the spirit would come on people. It couldn’t like and dwell people like New Testament believers who’ve already been saved by the blood. But even in the Old Testament, when God would use people, when he would anoint people, when he would pour His Spirit upon them to help them fulfill his purpose, it was really a grace thing. Like look at Samson for instance, the Spirit would come upon him and he would go set Israelites free from the Philistines, but Samson, he wasn’t getting the Spirit of God on him by his righteous deeds, by his blameless law keeping, he was a very flawed person, but God still used him for His purposes.

And another great example is David. And in Romans 4, Paul talks about how we receive rights standing with God and it’s by faith. And he uses Abraham as an example of faith in God’s grace. And he uses David as an example of grace. And I think he uses Abraham as example of faith because Abraham really needed faith. And he uses David as an example of grace because David really needed grace. In fact, David is listed in Hebrews 11, as one of God’s people in the faith hall of fame. I’m like, God, how could he be a faith hero? Asked God this years ago, and he asked me a question, “You know what David’s greatest act of faith was?” And I said, no. And I believe the Spirit of the Lord spoke to me and told me, “David’s greatest act of faith “was overcoming his own personal failure “to walk in a relationship with God.” But there’s a couple of statements in Romans 4, that really reveal this. And we can look at it really quickly, that David made, and this is from Psalm 32, but in Romans 4, he says this in verse six, “Even as David describes the blessedness of the man “to whom God imputes righteousness without works.” So David got a revelation of the gospel. And it is God imputes righteousness apart from works, saying, “Blessed are those whose inequities are forgiven “and who sins are covered.” So, God imputes his righteousness to us apart from our works. This is, he’s prophesying of the gospel when David says this in Psalm 32. But he says in verse eight here of Romans 4, “Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute it.”

That’s awesome.

My God is not keeping a record of our sin. He’s not even keeping track. Well, that is the gospel, that is the good news. And that is foreign to most people in a religious sense. And so when you begin to look at Galatians 3, in Galatians 3, Paul says a lot of different things. The first thing, because they had went back to trusting law, trying to trust the law to perfect their salvation, well, you can’t perfect perfect. And Jesus made you perfect in the spirit. Jesus made you righteous in the spirit. And he says, “Who has bewitched you “that you act like you’re under a spell,” in Galatians 3:1, “That you should not obey the truth “before whose eyes Jesus has been evidently set forth “and crucified among you. “I have a question for you, how did you receive the spirit? “How were you saved?” He says, “By the works of the law “or by the hearing of faith?” Well, anybody that knows anything about the gospel understands you are not saved by the works of the law. You were saved because you believe Jesus.

Now this is a very, very awesome thing that Paul is writing to the church at Galatia. But this is a circular letter. This letter made its way around the churches, it probably made its way to Peter, to James, to John, who, and I know James probably got this letter ’cause later on James writes, he writes about faith without works is dead, he’s talking about corresponding action. Faith is what actually moves you. Like you don’t work in order to stir up faith, you have faith in Jesus and that will change your actions.

Right.

And his examples of that, James, was the leader of the church in Jerusalem. So when he preached and when he writes in James, his two examples of faith without works, of great examples of faith are Abraham.

Right.

Which is an obvious one, but then his next example–

Is Rahab.

Is Rahab.

Yeah, and he says, “By faith the harlet Rahab was justified.”

So, I know that James took some pointers from Paul ’cause it affected his preaching, they’re in Jerusalem, they’re in the–

Right, sometimes people don’t understand the correlation between Galatians and James. And in James, James says, “Faith without work is dead.” He says that three times in James 2:17, verse 20 and verse 21.

He’s not talking about works of the law though.

No, and verse 26. No, he’s talking about works of the spirit. That’s, you got it. And in Galatians, he’s talking about works of the law. We read Galatians 2:16, which says, “No man is justified by the works of the law “in the side of God.” It’s evident. There’s only one way to be justified, that’s faith in Jesus.

Yeah, and Rahab put her faith in the one true God.

There are works of the spirit in you when you put your faith in Jesus or works of faith. So, in Galatians 3, then Paul goes on and he asks this question in verse five, he said, “He ministers to you the spirit “and works miracles among you. “How does he do it? “By the works of the law or by the hearing of faith?” So a lot of times, especially in Full Gospel Churches, we tend to get legalistic in Full Gospel Churches. And I am a Full Gospel person. I am a Pentecostal, Full Gospel, Charismatic, you name it, I’ll claim it, I claim all those things. But he says this, “He that ministers to you the spirit “and works miracles among you, how does he do it? “By the works of law or by the hearing…” So we’ll say you come to Jesus just like you are, but if you’re gonna minister, you gotta fast, you gotta pray, you gotta read your Bible, you gotta give, you gotta be kind to your neighbor. And we start adding all these things to Jesus. And he plainly says, “You were saved by the grace of God “and by the grace of God alone, “you just heard about Jesus and believed Him.” And most people in the church believe that if they have any revelation or understanding of the gospel at all. But then he says, “He that ministers “and works miracles among you, how’s he do it? “By the hearing of faith.” In other words, it’s the same grace that saved you, is the same grace that leads you into ministry. So I think he’s saying everything from the beginning of your salvation to the end of your ministry, your life here on earth is by grace through faith. Now he goes through Galatians 3 and he begins to talk about all these different things that we receive by faith what grace has provided. And he says in verse six, “Abraham believed God “and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” So we receive right standing with God by grace through faith or by faith in grace, amen. And he says, “No, you not, those who are the faith, “the same are the children of Abraham.” We’re the children of Abraham. We enter the Abraham at covenant by faith in his grace. So we’re saved, we minister, we’re righteous, we’re the children of Abraham. He says in verse eight, “The scripture for seeing “that God would justify the heathen through faith.” We’re justified by faith. What does it mean to be justified?

Just as if you never sinned.

Yeah, now that’s marvelous when you think about it because a lot of people don’t equate that. That’s like if you were in the garden with God, walking with God in the cool of the day. So the gospel, Jesus came to restore to us, to redeem us, right? And restore to us everything that Adam lost. So we have fellowship with God, not because of our performance, but we have fellowship with God because of the performance of Jesus. Praise God.

That’s awesome.

Amen. So when we look at this in verse eight, he says, “We’re justified.” But then he goes also and says that “God preached before the gospel to Abraham saying, “in you shall all nations of the earth be blessed?’ That’s in Genesis 12:1-3. So, some people think that now that we believe in grace, we don’t go to the Old Testament, And it says right there in Galatians 3:8, “The heart of the gospel.” That God preached grace, God preached the gospel to Abraham when he said, “In you shall all families of the earth be blessed?” That’s Genesis chapter 12:3. And so did you know what? You can see the gospel all throughout the Old Testament. So in the Old Testament, Christ is concealed, in the New Testament, Christ is revealed, but Jesus is the center of the scripture. Jesus is the center of the gospel. It’s all about Jesus, amen.

I was just thinking about just some of the things that people in the church today get really religious about. Just some of the the funniest things, some people get religious about instruments, and praise and worship, there are entire denominations that try to cut out instruments and worship, even though that’s very obvious in scripture. And some people try to cut out women from having any type of platform teaching, yet they quote Ruth at weddings.

[Lawson] Yeah.

Words that came out of Ruth’s mouth as an example of being dedicated, committed–

They’re ignorant of the scriptures. In the scriptures, women, Deborah was a prophetess in the Old Testament. There were three ministry offices in the Old Testament. King, priest and prophet, Deborah was a prophetess. In the New Testament, Anna was a prophetess who prayed over Jesus when they dedicated Him. I mean, you just see that women are used all there, I mean, God is not so stupid to eliminate over half of the body of Christ. And the Bible says, “There’s neither male nor female “in the spirit.” I think people don’t understand the spiritual realm. And I had a vision of the glory of God. And as I meditated on this thing, it was actually the first week of October, 2014. But as I meditated on this, the glory of God appeared to me to be a woman. I realized I saw Jesus, and I realized that I had a vision of Jesus and He is the glory of God, but God has invested that glory in us. But all these offices that are given, they’re given to who, they’re a spiritual office, they’re a spiritual realm. And so it’s not about being a man or woman. In fact, Paul says right here at the end of Galatians 3, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, “there is neither bond nor free, “there is neither male nor female, “you are one in Christ Jesus.” And these are spiritual offices. In Romans 16, Paul says that “Andronicus and Junia are of note among the apostles.” If a woman could be an apostles, she could be any other officer. Of course a woman could be a pastor. And I know examples of women who’ve been pastors that have done phenomenal. We know a pastor that started a church, Tree of Life in San Antonio, Texas years ago. And him and his wife raised it up to be 600 people over about a 20 year period of time. And then he died and went home to be with the Lord, she continued to pastor the church, built a new building, took it to 800 people. And you know what? She was a tremendous minister of the gospel. So thank God for the gospel.

I was watching a video about the founder of the Foursquare Denomination, Anne McPherson.

Aimee Semple McPherson

Aimee, Aimee, yeah,

Lester Sumrall said that people called her, the devil in address.

Well, she had been divorced, and, I mean–

Well, you’re talking about that, I was in a Full Gospel Denomination, I’m not gonna say which one it was, but I was licensed in that denomination. They do a lot of good work, but there for a time, they couldn’t have a woman pray or whatever, if you’d been divorced, you couldn’t be an usher. And it, my goodness, you know what they’ve done? They’ve eliminated half the body of Christ. Now, I don’t believe that’s the way it’s supposed to be. But you know what, if you’ve been divorced, Moses in the Old Testament suffer them to write a bill of divorcement because of the hardness of their heart. And if that was the case in the Old Testament, wouldn’t there be a case in the New Testament for that or better? And so, you know what? They’re still hardhearted people. So we’re gonna take a break and we’re gonna be back right after this break. We’re gonna continue to talk about all these things in Galatians 3 that we receive as part of the promise of Jesus. Friends, I wanna tell you about our grace package. I received a “Revelation of Grace” in Andrew Womack’s Ministry in 1994, after I’d been pastoring for six years. It revolutionized my life and it’s helped me in so many different ways. I actually have been called to preach and filled with the Holy Spirit in Andrew’s ministry 16 years prior to that, but when I received a “Revelation of Grace,” it changed me. We’ve also included a great teaching from my son Aaron Perdue on “The Abundance of Grace,” A single CD on “Entangled,” a great message on grace from Aaron and my series on “Galatians, the Grace of Christ.” You don’t want to miss this teaching, just like it’s revolutionized my life, it will revolutionize yours. You can share this with your friends. If you don’t wanna call in and get this, you can actually listen to these free on our website at charischristiancenter.com. We wanna get the word to you, blessings. Praise the Lord, friends, I’m glad you stayed tuned. We’ve been talking about all the things that we receive by faith in God’s Christ, what grace has provided. We talked about salvation, ministry, right standing with God or righteousness, we talked about being a child of Abraham, entering in the Abraham at Covenant, justification, we talked about blessing, all of these things in Galatians 3:8, “Blessing come by faith in Jesus.” And finally he says this in verse nine. He says, “So then those who are of the faith “are blessed with faithful Abraham.” I like it, one translation says, “All those of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.” How do you get the stuff? Just believe it. Just believe the gospel. You don’t get it because you’ve been a good boy. You get it because you’re a child of God, because Jesus paid for it. And he talks about this in verse 10, “For as many as are under the works of the law, “are under the curse. “For it’s written cursed it is everyone…” Here’s the real curse of the law. The law put all these demands on you and nobody has ever kept the law. There are 620 various laws to go along with the 10 commandments. And a lot of people think, well, I’ve kept the 10 commandments, but you haven’t even kept number one. And the rich young ruler came to Jesus. He said, “I’ve kept all these things “of Moses from my youth up.” And he was a rich young ruler. Keeping God’s law is good for you. But at the same point, Jesus said, “Well, you luck one thing.” He said, “Go sell your goods and give to the poor.” Well, his goods had him, he didn’t have his goods, they had him. And God doesn’t care if you have things, but he doesn’t want you to put things above Him. And what Jesus was really showing him, this is in Mark 10, was that he hadn’t even kept number one. The very first commandment is that you will have no other God before me. And he said he was keeping all these 10 plus the 620 various laws. And Jesus said, “Nope, you haven’t even kept number one,” when you think about it. And so, he says, “The law is,” he says in verse 11, “No man is justified by the law in the sight of God. “It’s evident for the just shall live by faith, “and the law is not of faith, “but the man that does them shall live in them.” So, man, if you’re gonna be justified by the law, you’ve gotta keep the whole law and nobody’s ever done it. So give up on law keeping and believe Jesus, praise God. Now, we look into verse 12. He says, “The law is not a faith.” Romans 14, I think it’s verse 23, the very last verse of Romans 14 says, “The law is not a faith.” And it says, well, that says, “The law is not a faith.” right here in Galatians 3:12. But Romans 14:23 says, “Whatsoever is not a faith is sin.” If you’re trying to be justified by your performance apart from Jesus, you are in sin, period. That’s what the Bible says, you listen–

Well, I like Jesus really preached to grace too. A lot of people take some of Jesus’s sayings and turn ’em around and make ’em like you have to add to the law.

[Lawson] Yeah.

Like the Sermon on the Mount, for example, Matthew 5, six and seven. Jesus gives actually six different examples from the law and just shows that if you follow these laws, it doesn’t make you righteous. he says, even if, like he talks about divorce and people twist it around. According to law, you could be divorced 20 times and still have kept the law.

[Lawson] Yeah.

You could, there’s no limit to divorcing. So, you could, so religious people love the law ’cause they can do whatever they want with it. You can say, “Well, I’ve kept the law “even though I’ve been divorced 20.” Some of the most religious people are some of the most spiteful, hate-filled people.

Oh, it is awful. I have been around religious people and they are demanding and demeaning and belittling. It is terrible.

[Aaron] And it’s a heart issue.

Yes, and so, we, man, I don’t want to be that way. Man, when people get like that, it’s ugly.

And Jesus said, in the law it says to love your neighbor, but people would add to it and say, “Well, you could hate your enemy then.” And he said, “Really, you should love your enemy.” It’s not, so some people could say, “Well, I live out in the country, “I don’t have any neighbors, “so I could just hate everyone.” That’s like religious people, religious people really hate everybody, They don’t really love anyone.

Well, it’s because they have the wrong image of God and they think that God is this big being God up in heaven, the big stick ready to whack you. And that’s not the truth. That is not the true image of God. And when you look at this in Galatians 3:13, he said, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse.” So redemption is one of these blessings. We’ve been redeemed from the curse. We’ve been purchased out of the curse being made a curse for it. “For it’s written, “cursed is everyone who hangs from the tree. “So that again, the blessing of Abraham “might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, “that we might receive the promise “of the Spirit through faith.” So the promise of the Holy Spirit is one of these blessings. So we could say salvation, ministry, right standing with God, righteousness, being part of the Abrahamic covenant, justification, blessing, redemption, praise God, being purchased outta the curse and the promised Holy Spirit all come by faith. We’re gonna jump on down because of time that in verse 18, Paul makes this statement and says, “If the inheritance be of the law, “then it is no more by promise. “But God gave it to Abraham by promise.” So we receive an inheritance. Now if you receive an inheritance, I received inheritance. It’s not because I work and sweated and toed and saved, it’s because somebody else worked and sweated and toed and saved. And so Jesus is the one who did the work and we receive the benefit. It’s an inheritance. You know what you do to receive inheritance? You just show up and believe it. Just show up and receive it, praise God. Well, that’s what you do to receive the gospel. Just show up and receive it. And then he says, “What’s the purpose of the law?” In verse 19, “It was added because of the transgression “till the seed should come “to whom the promise was made,” praise God. This promise was made to the seed and thy seed which is Christ, and when you believe on Jesus, praise God, you are the seed of Abraham by faith. And he goes on and says in verse 21, “If there had been a law given, “which could have given life right standing with God “would’ve been by the law.” But there wasn’t a law given, they couldn’t make a law that could give you life. That’s why God had to send Jesus. And so he says, “The promise of faith of Jesus Christ “is given to all those who believe.” And so he says, “The law was our school master “or our school teacher to bring us to Christ “that we might be justified by faith. “But since faith has come, “we’re no longer under this school master.”

I love that. It’s kind of like a lot of Christians wanna go back to elementary school, law keeping is like going back to elementary school. It’s like–

[Lawson] kindergarten. Like yeah, can I, you have to raise your hand to get a bathroom pass to go use the bathroom. And as believers, we shouldn’t be stuck in kindergarten all the time. We should be moving on–

Amen.

Where the Holy Spirit is now our teacher, not just the law.

Amen, praise God. Your sister-in-law, Peter’s wife Kendra, graduated from Duke University Law School. I believe she was number three in her law school class, but she’s not going back to kindergarten.

No.

She graduated from law school to live the good life. Man, you oughta graduate from law school to live the good life and the good life is through faith in Jesus and faith in Jesus alone. Finally, this last thing he says here in verse 11, he says, “You are all the children of God.” Or verse 26, “By faith in Jesus.” You know why you get all the stuff? You get all the stuff because you’re God’s kid, amen. Hallelujah, Aaron, you got a daughter and a son and they get blessed, I bless them whenever I’m around them and it’s not because they did anything to receive it. Praise God, it’s because you know what? They’re your kids, they’re my grandchildren, praise God. And they’re blessed. And you know what? You bless them because they’re your kids.

That’s great.

Amen, you and your brothers were a little ornery sometimes when you grew up, and I, you know what? I blessed you anyway, praise God, ’cause I loved you, because you’re my children and that’s why we get all the good stuff from God. If you need prayer, praise God, to receive healing, to receive salvation, the Holy Spirit, whatever promise it is, give us a call today, we would love to hear from you.
